“Zenit” versus “Rubin” is not an ordinary RFPL match. There was a period relatively recently when these clubs jointly won five championships in a row, and their personal relationships are interesting. “Sokker.ru” recalls the key meetings between St. Petersburg and Kazan.

April 10, 2003. RFPL. "Zenit" - "Rubin" (Petrzhelavs Berdyev) - 1:0

Goal: Shirl 48.

This meeting is special and memorable because it is the first elite division . The teams of St. Petersburg and Kazan met in the First Division in the early 90s, but the modern history of the relationship dates back to the April 2003 match, which ended in a minimal victory for Zenit: Radek Shirl scored the only goal from a free kick with the help of a ricochet at the beginning of the second half. The St. Petersburg team also won the away match, and in the final table of that championship, Zenit took second place, and Rubin took third. It was the advantage in head-to-head matches that allowed the Blue-White-Blues to finish higher.

A year passed, and Zenit and Rubin met again at Petrovsky in the match of the 5th round of the Russian Championship. Only this time it turned out much more meaningful! Seven goals, a penalty, two deletions – the winners of the previous championship had a lot of fun. The scenario of the meeting turned out to be exciting: the hosts were leading with a score of 3:1 at the break and were not in a hurry, but the Kazan team found the strength to equalize the score, taking advantage of the holes in the defense and the absence of Vyacheslav Malafeev. Alexander Kerzhakov had to unload his “terrible gun” at the end of the match - the winning blow was a sight for sore eyes!

October 25, 2006. RFPL. "Rubin" - "Zenit" (Berdyevvs Lawyer) - 3:0

In the fourth year of the relationship, the first defeat occurred. This is how Kurban Berdyev met Dick Advocaat in the Russian Championship, who headed Zenit a few months before the October match. The final result, in fact, predetermined Dominguez's early goal: that Rubin very rarely gave away matches in which it was leading. Arshavin, Kerzhakov and Denisov banged their heads against Berdyev's defensive wall, and in the middle of the second half, first the Zenit captain Radimov gave an assist to Benashur, and then Dominguez scored a double, converting a penalty. Zenit's revenge took place a year later in the same place and was brutal. During the match, the St. Petersburg team led with a score of 4:0, and only beautiful goal Petrovich's prestige allowed Rubin to clear the score. The following season, Rubin responded to Zenit symmetrically: they won both in Kazan and St. Petersburg, and also won championship title. The match, in which Berdyev’s squad scored two quick goals, took place a couple of weeks before the battle between the blue-white-blues and Manchester United for the UEFA Super Cup, which ended in favor Russian club. That is, “Zenit” was strong then, but “Rubin” in a single match still turned out to be head and shoulders above. The guests, by the way, ended the match in a double minority after the sending off of Puigrenier, whose substitution broke up Zenit’s game when there were still chances for a positive result (Bukharov scored his second goal from under the Frenchman, and then Sebastian received a red card for a foul last hope), and Tymoshchuk.

During Rubin's second championship campaign, both matches between the teams of St. Petersburg and Kazan ended in goalless draws, and in 2010 Luciano Spalletti made Zenit the champion, and for the match before last round The “blue-white-blue” arrived in the capital of Tatarstan already in this status. For a long time, the most striking matches of this confrontation went to Kazan; note that all the results are imbued with revenge. A major victory is met with defeat, and a glorious comeback will not be left without a symmetrical response. A year earlier, Rubin escaped defeat after the score was 0:2, and now Zenit not only saved itself, but also won, winning back two goals conceded already in the middle of the first half. By the way, it was after winning this action-packed thriller that the St. Petersburg team first took the lead in that championship (CSKA stumbled in Rostov-on-Don) and did not relinquish first place until the end of the season.

A unique case: Zenit and Rubin met on a neutral field in Samara and fought for the trophy, which the winner took after the final whistle. Kurban Berdyev's team wanted to win more, and the Kazan team achieved fair success, scoring two goals into Vyacheslav Malafeev's goal before the break. “Rubin” was not like itself: no “bus”, only fighting in all parts of the field and quickly delivering the ball to the attack line. Kurban Bekievich showed his coaching class, who would have thought that this trophy would be his last in Kazan, and after about a year and a half he would leave his post.

After success in the battle for the Russian Super Cup, Berdyev beat Zenit three more times in a row in the Russian Premier League, but after his departure, Rubin scraped together only one draw in five matches against the blue-white-blues, with four defeats. This fiasco was especially painful when the Kazan team, led by Rinat Bilyaletdinov, conceded six goals at Petrovsky. The first half turned out to be tough and not very spectacular, which did not stop Hulk from converting two penalties, but after the break the audience witnessed six goals. Substitute Salomon Rondon was especially persistent: the Venezuelan scored a hat-trick former club, and even gave an assist to Danny.

For Villas-Boas, Rubin turned out to be an easy target, and in the most recent match played, Zenit defeated Kazan convincingly in terms of score, although the guests desperately resisted. The Blue-White-Blues acted in a combinational manner, while “Rubin” relied on counterattacks, which more than once or twice penetrated the host formations. In particular, the guests hit the frame of the goal three times, and Lodygin did an extreme job. However, Zenit itself attacked abundantly and effectively, so the final victory in a bright match was logical.

Kazan “Rubin” is a club with a fairly long, more than 60-year history, most of which, however, it spent in the lower divisions of first the Union and then the Russian championships. It was only in the early 2000s that the Kazan team entered the major league for the first time, and soon became the leader of Russian football for some time. At the turn of 2000-2010. under the leadership of Kurban Berdyev, Rubin repeatedly won medals, including twice becoming the champion of Russia, winning a Cup and two Super Cups, and also reached the quarterfinals of the Europa League. IN Russian football during this period, he was a truly serious force, which was fully felt by Zenit, for which the matches with Rubin were not easy at that time.

The rivals met for the first time more than 50 years ago, in May of this year, in the USSR Cup. The Leningraders performed extremely poorly that season, and the Kazan team was one of the leaders of their subgroup in the first league, so the away defeat of the Zenit team could hardly be called a sensation. Although the final score 3:0, of course, surprised many. By the way, for Rubin, reaching the 1/8 finals of the USSR Cup was at that time the greatest achievement in history, and in general, in the future, until the collapse of the USSR, it reached this stage only once. But Zenit did not lose out either, managing to benefit even in a lost match. Then the 21-year-old Kazan football graduate, right back Vyacheslav Bulavin, played all 90 minutes for the hosts. And he played so convincingly that he attracted the attention of the Zenit coaching staff. As a result, a few months later he moved to the Leningrad team, where he spent more than 10 years and became one of the best right-backs in its entire history.

Zenit had to wait almost another quarter of a century for a meeting with Rubin in the national championship - only this year the teams played again, and for this, the St. Petersburgers had to drop down to the first league. That season they fought for promotion to the major league, and in meetings with Kazan they managed to score 3 out of 4 possible points, and at the same time, in some way, “pay off” for the major defeat of 1967, defeating them at the Kirov Stadium with a score of 4:0 . The brilliant St. Petersburg forward Vladimir Kulik then scored a hat-trick. At the end of the 1993 season, Rubin was relegated to the second league, and its next meeting with Zenit took place only 10 years later, now in the Premier League. And since then, the rivals have played each other every year, and their confrontation can be called one of the most intense in Russian football.

At first, Zenit managed to cope quite successfully with the Kazan team - three victories in the first three matches. Moreover, Zenit became the first Premier League club to beat Rubin away. However, the emerging successful streak was soon interrupted: Zenit lost both away and at home that year. Subsequently, the scales in this confrontation constantly tilted one way or the other. So, in the year the teams exchanged victories (1:0 at Petrovsky and 3:0 in Kazan), and in 2007, Zenit beat Rubin twice (2:1 at home and 4:1 away). By that time, the St. Petersburg team already had a comfortable advantage in both victories (7/4) and goals (21:17).

But in the future, everything was not so good for Zenit. This year, Rubin seriously strengthened its roster, after which it became the champion of Russia twice in a row, and very confidently, with a reserve, guaranteeing itself gold even before the last round. During this time, Zenit earned only 2 points in 4 meetings with him. And in subsequent years, victories over the Kazan team were given to them with great difficulty. Yes, Zenit did not lose 8 matches in a row, but there were very few victories during this time. Actually, over 6 years (from 2008 to 2013), Zenit won only 2 victories and suffered 6 defeats in 14 matches with Rubin. And as a result, in July 2013, for the first time in Russian history managed to take the lead in victories – 10/9.

All the successes of the Tatarstan club, including in meetings with Zenit, were achieved under coach Kurban Berdyev. But in December 2013 he was fired, and since then Rubin has managed to beat Zenit only once. And this can hardly be called a coincidence. Since the spring of 2014, Zenit, under the leadership of Andre Villas-Boas, in 5 matches won 4 victories with one draw (goal difference - 15:6), which allowed them to regain the lead in both victories (13/10) and goals scored (52: 46). This series continued under Mircea Lucescu, under whose leadership the St. Petersburg team beat the Kazan team in both matches in the 2016/17 season, and in the home match they achieved a victory with a large score of 4:1. This was already Zenit's third major victory over Rubin in the Russian Championship, and in this indicator it was equal to CSKA. More high results Only Moscow Spartak achieved four such victories. Zenit's unbeaten streak continued in the 2017/18 season under Roberto Mancini: a strong-willed victory at the St. Petersburg stadium (2:1) and a goalless draw in Kazan. Even the return of Berdyev did not help Rubin.

The five-year unbeaten streak of the St. Petersburg team, which included 8 wins and 2 draws, was interrupted only in December 2018. By the way, this was Zenit’s only home defeat in the 2018/19 “golden” championship. However, in the first round of the 2019/20 season, the Zenit team took convincing revenge, defeating the Kazan team at the Gazprom Arena with a score of 5:0. This victory became the largest in the history of the confrontation between the teams. Moreover, Zenit was the first and so far the only club to beat Rubin in the Premier League with a difference of five goals.

For Rubin, Zenit is one of the most difficult tests of strength. The Kazan team generally has few rivals, with whom they have a negative balance of victories and defeats in the Russian Championship, and the St. Petersburg team is among the three most important of them - only 34.2% of the points scored. Rubin plays worse only against Krasnodar (21.5%). At the same time, Zenit has 7 victories in Kazan, which no one else can boast of. In addition, the St. Petersburg team confidently leads in the number of goals in matches with the Kazan team in major league(61). For comparison, CSKA, which ranks second in terms of this indicator, plays against its own former team sent 3 goals into her goal. It was the second and on this moment the last hat-trick in the history of the confrontation between St. Petersburg and Kazan.

Russian fans, not yet spoiled by the abundance of foreign players, witnessed an unprecedented conflict: Rubin's Czech midfielder Tomas Cizek gave an interview on the eve of the match in which he criticized compatriot Radek Shirl both as a football player and as a performer of set pieces. The plot of the match between the winners of the previous championship developed according to the laws of a twisted thriller. In the middle of the first half, an adventurous run by Rubin goalkeeper Sergei Kozko outside the penalty area led to a penalty kick, which was converted by Alexander Spivak. Soon the Kazan team restored the balance through the efforts of the Brazilian Roni. For a quarter of an hour before the break, the ball practically did not leave the visiting half of the field. Both teams did not start the season very well, and this match largely determined what both would claim in the future. Over the previous year, Salomon Rondon, playing for Rubin, scored winning goals against Zenit twice. Now the forward had to play against his former teammates for the first time.
