Sports career

Goerges's career professional tennis started in 2005. The 16-year-old German played a dozen and a half matches without much success. The next year, Yulia's first successes begin to come: in August she reaches her debut singles final in Wallstedt and immediately wins. Next, a similar lower-ranking tournament was won in Bielefeld. A stable year with many quarter- and semi-finals allows the German to make a leap in the ranking of six hundred positions and rise to the Top500 of the single ranking. In the same year, the first doubles final was achieved - in July, Görges, together with compatriot Lydia Steinbach, reached the final of the tournament in Horb. The first experience turns out to be unsuccessful, but already in August (all at the same tournament in Wallstedt) Julia wins her first title.

In 2007, the German for the first time declared herself as a potential player in the top hundred of the WTA singles ranking: at the March tournament in Doha, Julia more than confidently qualified (having beaten the 99th racket of the world, Jelena Kostanic-Tosic). Then he achieves his first victory in the main draws of such tournaments (beating the strong Hungarian junior Agnes Savaj). In the second round, Goerges tries his abilities against the then 5th racket of the world Svetlana Kuznetsova and fights with a more experienced opponent on equal terms for almost a set. Subsequently, Goerges focuses on ITF tournaments and by mid-July gains enough ranking points there to make his debut in the qualifications of an adult Grand Slam tournament for the first time in August. Moreover, even before arriving in America, at a warm-up tournament in Stockholm, the German shows the level of her aspirations, making her way from qualification to the semi-finals of the competition (beating three Top100 players along the way).

At the US Open itself, Goerges confidently makes his way through the selection sieve, but by the will of the lot he ends up in the first round with the then first racket of the world, Justine Henin. The match between the daring debutant and the clear leader of the women's tour ended with a confident victory for the Belgian - 6:0 6:3. Until the end of the year, Goerges does not achieve any significant achievements and works more on his ranking, which by the end of the year reaches 131st place in the world. The constant alternation of ITF and WTA tournaments had a bad effect on the pairs' achievements, but even in this situation, Goerges was able to win two titles, and on the way to the second of them - in Ismaning - future Grand Slam champions Lucia Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova were defeated.

The 2008 season in singles was spent gradually getting used to a consistently more high level rivals A series of stable results in the period between the Australian Open and Wimbledon (the peak results were the quarterfinals in Memphis and Rome, as well as the semifinals in Cagnes-sur-Mer) allows the German to come close to the top 100 leading singles players in the world at the British Grand Slam tournament. At the competitions themselves, Goerges won their first victory in the main draws of tournaments in this series, defeating the 24th racket of the world, Katarina Srebotnik, in the protracted ending of the match - 16:14. A few weeks later, the German repeats this achievement on a different surface - beating the Slovenian on the hard courts of the competition in Portorož (where she then reaches the semi-finals). The further part of the season passed without much success, but the quarterfinals and a couple of semifinals at ITF competitions allowed us to consolidate our positions on the way to the top hundred of the singles rankings. In the doubles competition that season, the German almost gave up playing in small tournaments. Gradually gaining experience in games with more qualified opponents, by the end of the year Yulia was able to improve her best achievement in this category, reaching the finals of the competition in Ismaning.

2008-2009

The 2008 season in singles was spent gradually getting used to the consistently higher level of opponents. A series of stable results in the period between the Australian Open and Wimbledon (the peak results were the quarterfinals in Memphis and Rome, as well as the semifinals in Cagnes-sur-Mer) allows the German to come close to the top 100 leading singles players in the world at the British Grand Slam tournament. In the doubles competition that season, the German almost gave up playing in small tournaments. Gradually gaining experience in games with more qualified opponents, by the end of the year Yulia was able to improve her best achievement in this category, reaching the finals of the competition in Ismaning.

In the 2009 season, Goerges continues to gradually climb the ranking levels.

In the spring, having reached the semi-finals of competitions in Cagnes-sur-Mer and Bucharest, Julia becomes the 87th racket in the world. At the beginning of July, the German woman conquers a new milestone - Julia wins the ITF 100,000th event for the first time: in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Subsequently, the native of Bad Oldesloe is celebrated in the semi-finals of the Bronx and Quebec. The points scored at the end of the season are enough to take 76th place in the single rating.

The doubles part of the season was also quite good: in collaboration with Patti Schnyder, the German reached the semi-finals of the February tournament in Paris; then the German woman spent several very successful tournaments with Austrian Sandra Klemenschitz (with her we managed to reach two 100,000-meter finals). Finally, in the summer, Julia spent the two most successful careers of her career at that time in a row - at the WTA competitions in Portorož and Istanbul, the German reached the final twice (with different partners) and took her debut title at this level.

At the end of the calendar year, Goerges, paired with Georgian Oksana Kalashnikova, wins the 75,000th ITF event in the UAE.

All the achievements of this year are enough for 68th place in the pairs ranking.

2010

In the 2010 season, the German continued to improve her results.

The start of the singles season was without much success. Only once during this time did a German woman win more than one match in the tournament. Goerges also contributed to the defeat of her national team in the Fed Cup, losing his singles match.

A lot changed in July: having won the tournament in Biarritz for the second time in a row, Julia gained the necessary confidence and then reached the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Palermo and won a similar competition in Bad Gastein. These results allow the German to be among the fifty strongest tennis players in the world by the beginning of the hard season.

In the fall, on the way to the quarterfinals of the super tournament in Tokyo, Yulia, on the 9th attempt, defeats a player in the top ten of the world rankings (she beat the then seventh racket of the world, Samantha Stosur). Goerges later made it to two more quarter-finals (in Linz and Dubai) and reached the finals of the competition in Luxembourg (only his second time in indoor tournaments).

At the end of the year, the German woman’s name was listed on the 40th line of the single ranking.

The first half of the year in doubles competitions turned out to be much more productive: together with Jill Kreybas Goerges reached two semi-finals of WTA competitions (in Pattaya and Strasbourg); and together with Agnes Savaj - to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

The results improved slightly in July-August: in four tournaments, the German never lost before the semifinals and took two titles. At the end of this segment of the US Open season, Yulia, paired with compatriot Anna-Lena Grönefeld, reached the third round, where she lost to the Australian-Zimbabwean pair Anastasia Rodionova / Kara Black.

In the fall, the German woman chalked up two more titles won: together with the Slovenian Polona Hercog, she won a tournament in Seoul, and together with the Czech Vladimira Uglirzhova, she won a competition in Dubai. At the end of the season, Yulia is 36th in the pairs ranking.

2011

At the start of the new season, Julia continues her series of good results: making it to the semi-finals of Auckland and reaching the third round of the Australian Open. Next, the German helps her national team advance to the next round of the Fed Cup, bringing one victory in singles.

The next successes come to Goerges only in April - with the beginning of the dirt season. Yulia reaches the quarterfinals in Charleston, takes part in the national team's major victory in the Fed Cup match against the Americans. Next, Julia completely declares herself as, potentially, the leader of world tennis - having beaten three Top10 players at the competitions in Stuttgart (including the then first racket of the world Caroline Wozniacki), the German woman wins her first premier category title.

The success continues to develop: Goerges reaches the semi-finals of the super tournament in Madrid, and then is celebrated in the third rounds at Roland Garros and Wimbledon (losing also to Marion Bartoli and Dominika Cibulkova, who are having a good part of the season).

In the doubles competition, the German started the year with the highly experienced American Lisa Raymond. The experience turned out to be unsuccessful, and the main achievement during this period dates back to the tournament in Monterrey, where Yulia reached the semifinals not with Lisa, but with the Slovenian Polona Hercog. Later, with the growth of her results in singles, Julia did not spare the pair: so at Roland Garros, the German, paired with compatriot Andrea Petkovic, reached the third round (beating the strong American pair Mattek-Sands/Shaughnessy), and later - in July - Julia finally reaches her first doubles final of the season - in Bad Gastein.

Julia Gerges is a professional German tennis player, finalist of the 2014 Grand Slam (mixed doubles), winner of 6 WTA tournaments, finalist of the Fed Cup as part of the German national team. This article will present short biography female athletes.

Childhood

1988 is the year when Julia Gerges was born. Tennis became the girl’s main hobby from the age of five. It was at this age that parents first took their daughter to a local club. Julia's idols also became hers, and Sasha Nensel took over the training of young Gerges. She previously taught famous athlete from Germany named Nicholas Kiefer.

Going Pro

Julia Gerges began her tennis career in 2005 in the ITF federation. The girl’s debut could not be called successful: in five of the seven tournaments, the athlete was eliminated in the first round. But this did not bother Gerges. The girl continued to work to improve quality own game. And it bore fruit. IN next year Julia won confident victories in Bielfeld and Wahlstedt. In 2007, Gerges won tournaments in Bucharest and Antalya. The athlete also performed in the WTA for the first time. The debut in this federation can be called successful, since Yulia immediately reached the semi-finals, where she lost to Vera Dushevina. A little later, the athlete entered the Grand Slam competition. Unfortunately, the debut at this tournament was not so successful.

New victories

WTA and ITF are the federations in which Julia Gerges played in parallel in 2008. The tennis player's rating was constantly growing. Immediately after the end of the French Championship, she made her debut in the Top 100. Around the same time, the athlete won her first major match at Wimbledon. The game lasted almost four hours, during which Gerges defeated Katarina Srebotnik. But Yulia failed to advance to the second round. New Zealand professional Marina Erakovic prevented her from doing this.

WTA

In 2009, Julia Gerges decided to focus exclusively on tournaments of this association. She played in all four Grand Slam events that year. Although the start was not at all triumphant: in Brisbane the tennis player failed to qualify, losing to Anna-Lena Grönefeld. The next three performances were also unsuccessful: in Paris, Warsaw and Australia, Yulia was eliminated before the third round. The French Open was even worse for the athlete: she dropped out in the first round, suffering from heatstroke.

Defeats and successes

Julia Gerges started 2010 with a loss in the first round of the ASB Classic. Yanina Wickmeyer defeated her in two sets. The athlete performed a little better at the Australian Open - the girl managed to reach the second round. The most high achievements Gerges for 2011 - third round of the Australian Open and semi-final of the ABS Classic. In 2013, Julia performed very inconsistently. She lost nine times in the first round and only twice managed to win two matches in a row (Charleston and Australian Open). For this reason, Gerges fell back in the rankings to the end of the top fifty. A crisis single player was partly compensated by successes in pairs: in June, together with Zahlavova-Strytsova, the German woman reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Then Yulia celebrated with Daria Yurak at the finals at Stanford.

Tandem performances

In subsequent years, Gerges had to change her performance calendar in favor of weaker competitions. At one of them (in Pattaya), the athlete reached the semi-finals. Julia showed good results in doubles, teaming up with Grönefeld. In May 2014, the tennis players reached the semifinals of the competition in Rome, and in June they reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. The small number of matches in doubles and singles allowed Yulia to focus on mixed doubles competitions. Paired with Nenad Zenovic, she managed to reach the Roland Garros final.
