Valery Gazzaev - the story of a coach from Vladikavkaz

Valery Georgievich was a student of the city team "Spartak" Ordzhonikidze. Gazzaev's first coach was Musa Danilovich Tsalikov. His playing career took place in such clubs as Lokomotiv Moscow, Dynamo Moscow, and Dynamo Tbilisi. He played 283 matches in the USSR championships, scored 89 goals, played 8 matches in the USSR national team, scored 4 goals. Member of Grigory Fedotov's scorers club (117 goals).

The first club on coaching work was Valery Gazzaev’s home club “Spartak” Ordzhonikidze. His further career progressed between the Vladikavkaz club and Dynamo Moscow. He left twice and comes to the post of head coach of both teams.

In 2001, Gazzaev headed CSKA Moscow and it was from that moment that the specialist discovered his talent for finding gifted football players and giving them a chance to play for the world. high level. This was the case with Igor Akinfeev, the Brezutsky brothers, Yuri Zhirkov, Anan Dzagoev, the core that mostly plays now is the merit of Valery.

The best achievement on the European stage was winning the UEFA Cup in 2005 for the first time in Russia. In Lisbon, CSKA beat Sporting 3:1.

Starting from mid-2007, when CSKA began to give frankly average results both in the domestic and European arena. Rumors spread about his possible resignation. Despite the confidence of CSKA President Giner in Gazzaev, the specialist nevertheless resigned, explaining his departure by psychological fatigue.

On June 20, 2009, Georgievich received Dynamo Kiev. And just like CSKA, it places an emphasis on young and promising people. Andrey Yarmolenko, Denis Garmash, Evgeniy Khacheridi, Roman Zozulya, Vladimir Koval - these are the players who were discovered by the mentor during his time in Kyiv.

On October 1, 2010 he left the club. On January 11, 2011, he became president of Alania. The son of Valery Georgievich was appointed head coach of the club.

He was the ideological inspirer and General Director of the ANO "OFL Organizing Committee". This committee dealt with the issue of unifying two football championships, Russia and Ukraine. But the project remained on paper and did not go beyond loud statements and discussions.

Born on August 7, 1954 in Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz). Father - Gazzaev Georgy Khristoforovich (born 1920). Mother - Makieva Olga Semenovna (born 1921). Wife – Bella Viktorovna Gazzaeva (born 1956), housewife. Sons: Vladimir (born 1980), Aslan (born 1981). Daughter – Victoria (born 1994).

When the son of a well-known wrestler in Ordzhonikidze, and in everyday life - builder Georgy Gazzaev, Valery, turned one year old, his parents, as usual, laid out various toys and household items in front of him - scissors, a pen, a notebook, a piece of bread, a pie, a lot of other sundries and - a small ball . Ossetians have a belief: whichever subject a child is especially interested in, his adult life will be connected with it. And although the ball lay in the very corner of the room, the boy crawled past everything else and, taking it in his hands, began to examine it.

Children's coach Musa Danilovich Tsalikov took Gazzaev from the yard team to the training group of Ordzhonikidze "Spartak" solely at the request of his relatives. “He was 12 years old - the age at which my guys already knew something,” said Gazzaev’s first mentor. “I took him, believing that he would quickly realize how much weaker he was than everyone else, and would stop going to training. I could not imagine what kind of strong-willed charge was hidden in the soul of this boy. There were many talented guys in that group, but the only one who became a real star, – Valery Gazzaev!”

Since childhood, he was a real warrior, pathologically did not tolerate defeat. Georgy Khuadonov, the most gifted of Tsalikov’s group, said: “I was already amazed at that time that there were no friends for him on the field. If one of us did not do enough work, played carelessly, he attacked the lazy person like a vulture, scolded him at his best. If we lost, in the locker room he would cry bitterly and inconsolably, at the same time managing to shout that it was all because of us, that one played wrong in this episode, the other in the next... - it’s amazing how he remembered everything vicissitudes of the match. The guys tried to console Valera: “We give you our word that for the next match we will all come together as one and definitely win!” To which he replied through tears and sobs: “Don’t you understand - this will be a completely different match, and today we will never win.”

More than 40 years later, in October 2002, when CSKA, led by Gazzaev, only lost a draw in added time return match and the entry into the next stage of the UEFA Cup for the Italian Parma, he burst into the locker room and smashed his players to smithereens. His faithful friend and assistant Nikolai Latysh almost forcibly took him out into the corridor: “Valera, why are you doing this to them? Well, no luck, a few minutes were not enough to keep the score. Remember - the Germans, Bayern, in the last minutes, seconds, practically won the match to Manchester, and not just anywhere, but in the Champions League final.” What Latvian heard in response amazed even him: “Remember, Kolya, once and for all: we are not Germans, we are Russians, and we have no right to compromise the honor of our fathers!”

Sergei Korshunov, who coached Spartak in Ordzhonikidze in 1971, asked to recommend the five best graduates from the training groups to him. Gazzaev, by that time already a student at the Faculty of Agronomy of the Agricultural Institute, was not in this top five. It was a terrible blow. And the next morning he went to the stadium to hand over his equipment and declare that he was done with football. But Korshunov asked for another striker, and Tsalikov named Gazzaev. Agriculture immediately remained on the sidelines, and in the same season the forward, who was not even seventeen, made his debut for Spartak.

A few months later, Honored Coach of the USSR Evgeny Lyadin invited the debutant to the country’s youth team. But on next year The time came for military service, and Gazzaev ended up in Rostov SKA. Of the more than fifty recruits, the team's head coach, Joseph Betsa, was supposed to send back more than half by the start of the season. Gazzaev withstood the fiercest competition and remained on the team. And then the leadership of Spartak (Ordzhonikidze) rescued him from the Rostov garrison. In the fall of 1975, Honored Coach of the RSFSR Igor Volchok invited the young striker to Lokomotiv Moscow.

His partner on the railway team, and now a close friend and irreconcilable rival in the coaching field, Yuri S?min said: “It will do new player team or not is usually found out during preseason training camps. Gazzaev did not require any probationary period. From the very first training, it became obvious that in terms of technique, speed, thinking, and the character of the leader, a mature player had joined the team, despite his youth. I consider Valery Gazzaev the most valuable acquisition of Lokomotiv in the 1970-1980s.”

Best of the day

“As talented as he was, he was so difficult to control,” recalled Igor Volchok. “He went home several times, and our trainers had to make trips to Vladikavkaz to bring him back. I don’t know how all this would have ended if the then popular forward of the USSR national team from Tbilisi, Givi Nodia, had not appeared in Lokomotiv. He and Valera settled in the same room at the base, and soon I noticed how Gazzaev was changing before my eyes. better side. I still don’t know the mechanism of this influence, but Valery has become more serious, more flexible, and more diligent in his work. Probably, Nodiy’s purely human charm and his high authority in football had an impact.”

Gazzaev learned to control himself in extreme situations, and even then his interest in coaching awoke. He suddenly became interested football details, during game analysis and theoretical classes, he bombarded Volchok with questions: what, how and why? And on the field he even had his own “duty” teams, which he “undressed” from season to season, no matter how tough the opponents applied to him - Dynamo Minsk, Zenit Leningrad. Marriage contributed to even greater balance in relationships with people. Gazzaev played in Moscow, but his love Bella remained in Vladikavkaz. Unable to bear the separation, they got married on December 11, 1976. By that time, the first one appeared in Gazzaev’s collection Golden medal- European champion as part of the USSR youth team.

From his youth, national team coaches suddenly forgot about Gazzaev. Valentin Nikolaev, the youth team coach, remembered. And in the second final match, Gazzaev, together with David Kipiani, literally tore apart the defense of the Hungarian team, bringing our team a victory - 2:1. 4 years later, in the same final match, Yuri Susloparov scored the decisive goal against the GDR national team after a breakthrough and pass from Gazzaev. And in 1978, the coach of the first USSR national team Nikita Simonyan made the forward’s most cherished dream come true. “For the match with the experimental Italian national team, I prepared my experiment - I fielded three strikers: Oleg Blokhin, Vladimir Gutsaev and Valery Gazzaev,” said Simonyan. – And in the attack we had not just a hurricane, but a real fireworks display of brilliant episodes. We won 3:1, and Gazzaev scored a goal and made an assist.” The next year, under the leadership of Konstantin Beskov, Gazzaev became a bronze medalist at the Moscow Olympics.

In 1977, Gazzaev received an invitation to a foreign club. During Lokomotiv's tour of Turkey, the performance of the leader of the attack of the railway team so captured the imagination of the management of the most popular Istanbul club Fenerbahce that a whole delegation from there showed up to Gazzaev with a check for one and a half million dollars - crazy money at that time. But then the departure of a Soviet athlete abroad was considered tantamount to treason, with obvious consequences for family and friends. Therefore, right from the door, Gazzaev announced to the visitors that their persuasion was in vain.

In the fall of 1978, the coach of Dynamo Moscow, Alexander Sevidov, who was assembling the championship team under his leadership, invited Gazzaev to join him. “Of all the coaches with whom fate brought Gazzaev, only Alexander Sevidov knew his true value, found a way for his maximum self-expression in football, putting his unparalleled ability to aggravate the situation, his dribbling and feints at the service of the team,” considered the prominent sports journalist Arkady Galinsky. “Only Sevidov’s soloist, the “free shooter” Gazzaev, also became a team player.” Unfortunately, the collaboration between two bright personalities turned out to be short-lived. “There was a slander, and there was a denunciation” - and Sevidov was expelled from Dynamo. At the party meeting, where the so-called “Sevidov case” was discussed, none of the Dynamo celebrities of that time - the national team players - dared to stand up for the coach. And only the newcomer Gazzaev stood up and said: “If you remove Sevidov from the team, I’m leaving!” It took the Dynamo leadership then many days and efforts to persuade the obstinate man. And the brilliant Dynamo ensemble that took shape in the spring of 1979, left without a rudder and without sails, lost its course and did not live up to the championship hopes placed on it.

The consequences of that tragedy still affect the fate of the club, and Gazzaev had to endure perhaps the darkest days and years of Dynamo. Going to the team, in his words, to rinse gold medals in champagne in the fall, he never saw their alluring shine. But, performing at Dynamo in far from better times for the club, Gazzaev never allowed himself to be disorganized or to have a frivolous attitude even towards an ordinary match. He could have played better or worse, but never carelessly, he fought on the field with full dedication, not sparing himself, although the team’s contentment with little in those years caused him inexpressible mental pain.

Sevidov was returned in 1984, but it was too late. With his arrival, Gazzaev experienced a new upsurge in his game, which was especially clearly manifested in the final match of the USSR Cup with Zenit Leningrad. The game was easier for him than ever, sometimes he beat two opponents at once, but it took Dynamo no time to open the scoring. It was only in the 7th minute of extra time that Gazzaev made a superb opening to Alexander Borodyuk’s cross and scored a beautiful goal with his falling header. And about ten minutes later, he beat two defenders on the flank and accurately placed the ball on Borodyuk’s foot. 2:0 – and the Cup goes to Dynamo Moscow. And then came a hat-trick away in a match with the Yugoslav Hajduk, more than half of which consisted of national team players, and Dynamo’s victory – 5:2. The team began to see sprouts again interesting game, but her performance was still uneven. This was confirmed by the match with Rostov SKA. Leading 3:0, Dynamo managed to miss the victory - 3:4, after which Sevidov was replaced by Eduard Malofeev, who was already in the team in some undefined role. Gazzaev was accustomed to the position of the leader of Dynamo, to the fact that he could only be replaced in the game in case of injury. And suddenly, in the middle of the second half of the match with Ararat, Malofeev replaced him with Sergei Stukashov... The next day after that replacement, Gazzaev wrote a letter of resignation from the team and said goodbye to the players. The leadership of the Dynamo society, who treated him warmly, immediately offered him the position of head of the football and hockey department of the Central Council, and Malofeev, in turn, to become the head of the team. But he rejected both, unexpectedly accepting the invitation of Dynamo Tbilisi coach Nodar Akhalkatsi. And he began to score according to his usual “schedule”, but the conflict with Akhalkatsi now put a final end to the career of Gazzaev the forward.

He, by that time a graduate of the Moscow Law Institute, was offered a postgraduate course. But the choice of his future career was decided by an episode that happened back in the spring of 1985. Dynamo led 1:0 after the first half of the match with Rapid Vienna for the UEFA Cup, and during the break Sevidov asked the players to speak out what, in their opinion, should be changed in the game. Gazzaev replied that it was necessary to change two players to Pudyshev and Borodyuk. However, Sevidov left everything unchanged, and it was these two players who were responsible for the fact that the score soon changed to 1:3. The coach made changes, but it was too late. The next morning, Sevidov summoned Gazzaev and said: “You should definitely become a coach!”

Returning home from Tbilisi, Gazzaev came to the director football school Moscow "Dynamo" Viktor Tsarev, asked for a job. At the same time, he became a student at the Higher School of Coaches, graduating with excellent marks. He had a chance to start in his native Ordzhonikidze practically from scratch. But just two years later, Ordzhonikidze’s Spartak turned from an outsider into a leader in the first league and won a ticket to the top league. At the end of the season, Gazzaev received an invitation to head Dynamo Moscow. With him, the club began to emerge from a state of stagnation, bright personalities sparkled in it in a new way - Igor Simutenkov, Andrey Kobelev, Dmitry Cheryshev, Igor Kolyvanov, Sergey Kiryakov, Alexander Uvarov, Andrey Chernyshov, Omari Tetradze, Viktor Leonenko. “Dynamo” produced a series of excellent games in the Russian Championship, in the UEFA Cup with the Italian “Torino”, the French “Cannes”... But Gazzaev was not satisfied with this level of the team’s play, he was constantly looking for something new, and 1993 could have become turning point on the club's path to the championship. However, a devastating defeat at the start of the next UEFA Cup from Eintracht Frankfurt - 0:6 - shattered this prospect. Gazzaev took all the blame for the shame the team experienced and at a press conference immediately after the end of the match announced his voluntary resignation. Our football has never seen anything like this before; leading experts assessed Gazzaev’s act as an act of civil courage. And a year earlier, Valery Gazzaev’s speech at the founding conference of the Russian Football Union essentially prevented a split in domestic football and became a turning point in the creation of a new all-Russian football organization.

The following year, Gazzaev again took the helm of Spartak Vladikavkaz, and in 1995, North Ossetia rejoiced: the Vladikavkaz team, having been the first to break the monopoly of Moscow Spartak, won championship gold. “In terms of our attitude towards football, we have long deserved the championship title,” said the then President of North Ossetia Akhsarbek Galazov. “All we needed was a person who would find the way to him.” Having become acquainted with Valery Gazzaev’s program, I realized that such a person had finally been found.” The next year, Vladikavkaz “Alania” again comes first to the finish line of the Russian championship, but with an equal number of points with “Spartak” and is inferior to the opponent in the replay, content with the “silver” of the championship.

Over the years, Gazzaev has become increasingly constrained within the framework of a provincial club, the possibilities of which are limited. He needs new space, working with football players himself highly qualified. He returns to Dynamo Moscow, but doesn’t find himself there either. And only after heading CSKA at the end of 2001, he gets the opportunity to implement his most daring plans. Usually a coach leaves himself three years to rise to the heights of a champion, but Gazzaev started right off the bat, and already in the spring of 2002, the army team under his leadership won the Russian Cup for the first time.

In the same year, after O. Romantsev left the national team at the end of the World Championships in Korea and Japan, V. Gazzaev replaced him as head coach of the national team (2002–2003). Alas, in this field, the biography of Valery Georgievich was replenished with bleak pages - defeats in the group tournament of the 2004 European Championship from Georgia and Albania...

At the finish line of the 2002 national championship, CSKA is hot on the heels of the leader, the capital's Lokomotiv, having practically reserved silver for itself, but not wanting to be content with it. Gazzaev’s perseverance was rewarded the following year, 2003, when, without giving up the lead throughout the entire championship, the army club won the “gold” of the national championship.

In the 2004/2005 season, CSKA, under the leadership of V.G. Gazzaev, won the UEFA Cup for the first time in the history of domestic football.

V.G. Gazzaev – Honored Coach Russian Federation(1990), international master of sports (1980), bronze medalist Olympic Games(1980), European champion as part of the USSR youth team (1976, 1980), winner of the USSR Cup (1984), finalist of the Cup (1979), winner of the International Cup sports union railway workers (1976). Valery Georgievich-VELICHINA. But the PATRIARCH OF OSSETIAN football is ((((((MUSSA TSALIKOV - A GENIUS FROM GOD)))))))If he had the same opportunities, then the history of world football would have to be rewritten

The third issue of our photo column is dedicated to Valery Gazzaev- a person who doesn’t need to be introduced again. Suffice it to say that he became the first Russian coach to bring the European Cup to our country. Gazzaev spent most of his playing career at Dynamo Moscow (197 matches, 70 goals scored). And he achieved his main successes as a head coach at the helm of another capital team - CSKA, winning three championship titles and the UEFA Cup with them.

Now Gazzaev is getting used to his new role - a football functionary and, as in previous years, is ready to devote his powerful energy to work. But he does not forget about his family. It so happened that the time of our meeting coincided with the official match of the Kazakh “Aktobe”, which is coached by his son Vladimir. And Valery Georgievich was regularly distracted by the video broadcast that was on the team’s official website, commenting on it very emotionally. But this did not stop him from speaking vividly and meaningfully about his photographs, which we selected for the column. The final photo story is in front of you.

Mom and dad raised me in the canons of proper upbringing. I would never have achieved anything if it weren't for my parents. 1955

There was a real and strong friendship with the brothers. In the top photo I am 10 years old, my middle brother is 8, and the youngest is 4 years old. In the bottom photo I'm about 45 years old. 1964, 2000.

"Dynamo" (Moscow) - "Dynamo" (Tbilisi). Dynamo Tbilisi defenders Sulakvelidze and Chivadze (left) are fighting for the ball with me. I consider the latter to be the best central defender of that time, along with Vagiz Khidiyatullin. Chivadze was distinguished by his intelligent and intellectual style of play. 1980s

With the great coach Konstantin Beskov. Even then I was interested in all the nuances and secrets of the art of coaching. 1980s

For any athlete, defending the colors of the national team is a great honor. The first time I wore a USSR national team jersey was in Tehran against the Iranian team. I broke my collarbone in that game. And in the chosen photo I am in a qualifying match for the Olympic Games - 1984 against the Greek team. We won with a score of 3:0 and eventually took first place in the group, but did not go to the final tournament in Los Angeles due to the general boycott of the Soviet delegation. Unfortunately, politics interfered with sports. And sport should always be outside of politics. 1983

The first year of my work in Ossetia. I am amazed at myself, how did I survive such a test? When did I start coaching career, took over a team of nine people, with three of them being goalkeepers. And these guys were dressed worse than the factory team. But already in the second year of my work, the local Spartak entered the Major League USSR Championship. 1989

I'm proud of this photo. “Spartak-Alania” at that time had a great team. In the photo from left to right: Kornienko, Pagaev, Derkach, Tedeev, Tetradze, Dzhioev, Suleymanov, Timofeev. In the top row are Agaev, Kavelashvili, Yanovsky, Kanishchev. We became champions at the Dynamo stadium in a match with CSKA. Everything is symbolic and interconnected. Then the club was called “Spartak-Alania” and beat the red-blues with a score of 2:1. In total, we lost two matches that season, and there was a real football boom in the republic. From this team Yanovsky went to PSG, Tetradze to Roma. 1995

Important players of Spartak-Alania are Tedeev, Derkach, Yanovsky. 1995

Next to me are singers and long-term fans of Dynamo Moscow - Slava Dobrynin and Lev Leshchenko and also a journalist Leonid Trakhtenberg. I met Lyova and Slava immediately after moving to the local Dynamo. Since then, we have maintained the warmest relations and try to always find a reason to meet. 2000s.

Qualifying match for the European Championship in Portugal. The Russian national team met with the Irish team in Moscow at the Lokomotiv stadium. In the photo from left to right: coaching staff: Nikolai Latysh, me, Alexander Stelmakh, Nikolai Khudiev, Alexander Borodyuk, service personnel, substitute players: Solomatin, Khokhlov, Kovtun, Semshov, Arshavin, Kerzhakov. We won that match with a score of 4:2. It must be said that the Irish team had a very strong team, who played decently at the 2002 World Championships. For the first time in Russian history the anthem was sung by an opera singer Lyubov Kazarnovskaya. It was a pleasure to work as a national team coach. This is a great responsibility for the entire country.

We met with Mourinho in the stands after the Champions League group stage game between Chelsea and CSKA. Unfortunately, the army team lost to the British that evening with a score of 0:1. As for Mourinho, he is certainly one of the best specialists in the world. The Portuguese is a very strong motivator who knows how to manage a team well. 2004

He came to our game with Auxerre in the UEFA Cup Roman Arkadievich Abramovich. We lost this away match with a score of 0:2, while the first home game won 4:0 and advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament. We found some positive aspects in this defeat. In the photo with the club president Evgeniy Giner Let's discuss the game. Abramovich just listened and reassured us: “Everything is fine, the main thing is that we made it to the next round.” 2005 year.

Our goal was to reach the finals of the tournament. And at every training session, theoretical classes, during meals, we talked about it. We all needed to buy into this idea. The turning point for CSKA was the first match of the 1/16 finals with Benfica. Before this, I told the guys: “If we beat Benfica, we will play in the final.” The words became prophetic. 2005 year.

Lennart Johansson presents us with gold medals after winning the UEFA Cup. A very pleasant moment. During the final match against Sporting, two minutes before the end of the half, every few seconds I asked: “How much time is left?” Winning the UEFA Cup evokes special feelings, because you have done something for your country, family, and friends. During the break of the match, before entering the field, he told the players: “We are losing 0:1. 45 minutes left. You need to play them in such a way that they will be remembered for the rest of your life. Perhaps not everyone will have the opportunity to take part in such a match.” 2005 year.

My happiness in the champion locker room was difficult to describe in words. 2005 year.

Sergei Borisovich Ivanov was the Minister of Defense at that time and gave me a combat registered pistol when CSKA won the UEFA Cup. I keep the weapon at home and am very proud to have received such a gift. After all, not everyone has a pistol donated by the Russian Minister of Defense. When presenting it, Sergei Borisovich said that a real man should be given a weapon. I even managed to shoot a pistol at a shooting range. 2005 year.

On the picture Vagner Love and Vyacheslav Chanov. Then CSKA won in Vladivostok over Luch-Energia and won the third Russian gold in its history a round before the end of the championship. In honor of the triumph, we lit a victory cigar. In fact, winning the championship once is not so difficult, but keeping a team in the lead for seven years is not easy. One day, after another victory in the National Cup, a young player asked me: “We won this trophy for the fourth time, but what, should we win it next year too?” Well, that's why he's young. 2006

Former football coach and now politician Valery Gazzaev is especially respected by CSKA fans. In 2005, CSKA, under his leadership, became the first Russian club to win the UEFA Cup. Together with the “red-blues”, as well as the football players of “Alania”, Gazzaev won the national championship four times - this is an unprecedented indicator for Russian football.

In 2013, he left his job as a mentor and went into politics. In 2016, he was elected to the State Duma, where he is involved in the development of sports.

Childhood and youth

The future EuroCup triumphant was born on August 7, 1954 in Ordzhonikidze - as Vladikavkaz was then called - into an Ossetian family. The boy’s father, Georgy Gazzaev, was involved in wrestling and was not against his son’s passion for sports.

Later, the coach’s parents said that on the first birthday, according to national tradition, they laid out toys and various things in front of the hero of the occasion. According to custom, this makes it possible to predict which area the child's destiny will be connected with when he grows up. Valera ignored not only the toys, but also the pies, and crawled towards the ball lying in the distance.

By football standards, Valera entered the professional training group late - at the age of 12. After the assistance of friends, the coach of the city team “Spartak” Musa Tsalikov agreed to accept the boy from the street team. As Tsalikov admits later, he decided to give the newcomer the opportunity to realize the difference between his preparation and the training of those who came to study before him.

The mentor hoped that Gazzaev would give up and leave the team on his own. No one imagined that after 30 years the rookie would lead the team to the All-Russian championship, and after 45 he would take the chair of the president of the club, which by that time would be renamed Alania.

However, Valera managed to surprise the coach and teammates already in the first days. The child mourned each defeat with bitter tears in the locker room, and on the field, as soon as he noticed a mistake or laziness, he attacked the players carelessly. The zeal for victory and the will that young football player showed in training, they did not leave him in the training group for all three years. He made his debut in the main team of Spartak at the age of 16. For the sake of sports, Gazzaev dropped out of his first year at the Agricultural Institute, where he acquired the specialty of an agronomist.

Football

Having made his debut in the team from Ordzhonikidze in 1971, Gazzaev played in it for two more seasons before he was drafted into the army. The football player passed it while playing for Rostov SKA. In 1975, the player returned to the Caucasus and spent a season that revealed his talent as a scorer. During this period, he entered the field in 33 matches and scored 14 goals.

The capital's Lokomotiv became interested in the 21-year-old forward, and Valery moved to Moscow in the fall. Russian coach Later, in an interview, he assessed his friend and bitter rival on the field Gazzaev as the best acquisition of the “railroad workers” in the last 20 years of the Soviet era.

The athlete successfully plays not only for Lokomotiv, but also for the national team: in 1976 national team wins the European Youth Championship. But the more successful Gazzaev plays, the more difficult it is for coaches to deal with him. Representatives of the club flew to North Ossetia more than once to return a player who had left the base without permission: the footballer each time went to his beloved, who remained in Ordzhonikidze.

It is believed that another forward of the club, Givi Nodia, had a positive influence on the athlete. The newcomer was placed in Gazzaev’s room, and the players became friends. Coach Igor Volchok noted that the striker’s obstinate character became softer, and Valery himself learned to control his emotions.

Since 1978, he played for the USSR national team and was one of the participants in the “experimental” friendly match with the Italians in 1979. The coaching staff of this team was criticized for their desire to include only experienced players in the starting lineup, and they decided to send only promising players to the unofficial meeting.

The game became an experimental platform for the Soviet side as well. If previously the attack was built along the flanks, then for this match the coach of the USSR national team Nikita Simonyan fielded three forwards at once, giving them a chance to play along the entire offensive front. These attackers were Vladimir Gutsaev and Valery Gazzaev. The meeting ended with a score of 3:1 in favor of the USSR team, and Gazzaev’s biography was expanded not only with a goal, but also with an assist.

The football player's talent was revealed to its maximum in the Dynamo team (Moscow) under the leadership of coach Alexander Sevidov. The mentor managed to fit the forward's play into the team's game so that it brought the greatest benefit. The success of the tandem was demonstrated by the final match for the USSR Cup between Dynamo and Zenit.

The gates of both teams remained “unopened” throughout the main time, and the players scored both goals in the match in extra periods. The first one was scored by Gazzaev: he managed to catch a pass from Alexander Borodyuk and, already falling, made a header. The second goal was scored by Borodyuk from Gazzaev’s feed.

After a conflict with Eduard Malofeev, who replaced Sevidov as Dynamo coach, Gazzaev left to play for Dynamo Tbilisi in 1986. But even in Georgia he failed to establish relationships with the coaching staff. At the age of 32, the athlete completed his playing career.

While playing for the capital's clubs, Valery Georgievich received a diploma from the All-Union Correspondence Institute of Law, but did not go to work in this specialty. Returning from Tbilisi to Moscow, he became a student at the Higher School of Coaches, and at the same time coached the wards of the capital’s Dynamo school. While studying in his last year, 35-year-old Gazzaev returned to where his football career- to Spartak from Ordzhonikidze, replacing .

The first season turned out to be a failure for the debut coach: in 1979 the team finished in 17th place. But since the new season, Gazzaev has updated the roster and led the team to victory. For the first time in the last 20 years, the team of the city, shortly before renamed Vladikavkaz, triumphantly returned to the First League. In a more prestigious tournament a year later, Spartak finished in 11th place, and the core of players was formed who later led the team to the All-Russian championship.

The successes of the novice coach drew the attention of one of the former clubs forward: since 1991, Gazzaev began training the capital's Dynamo team. A year later, the expected success took place - the team took bronze at the Russian Championship. But soon it played out football tragedy. Having met with the German Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Cup, Dynamo lost to their opponents. The score 0:6 psychologically traumatized Gazzaev so much that a day later the mentor chose to quit and took a break from work.

The failure forces the coach to return to where they still remember his successes - to Vladikavkaz. In the absence of the former mentor in 1992, Spartak, under the leadership former player Alexandra Novikova's team wins silver at the national championship and continues to perform successfully in the tournament.

But Muscovite Novikov decides to return home, and in 1994 Gazzaev again took the position of coach. Since 1995, the team has been renamed Spartak-Alania, and at the season finale this name appears in the first line of the Russian Championship table: the team finally gets to gold.

This time Gazzaev devotes five years to working at the Vladikavkaz club. A year later, his players are again in the lead in the tournament, but, having scored the same number of points with Moscow Spartak, they lose to the red and white in the “golden match” and receive silver. Gazzaev was unable to repeat his success with this team. In 1999, he headed the headquarters of the capital's Dynamo, but even here he was unable to show significant results.

A new round of his mentoring career was working with the CSKA team. At the turn of the century, the club changed owners, and he was not satisfied with the unsuccessful performance of the Army team in the 2001 championship. In the summer they invited Gazzaev. With his arrival, the “golden era” began for the “red-blues”. Already in 2002, CSKA took the Russian Cup, beating Zenit in the final, and received silver in the national championship. In 2003, the football players won gold at the national tournament.

Until Valery Georgievich left the post of army team coach, CSKA invariably found itself in the top three leaders of the Russian championship. In addition, the team wins the National Cup three more times and the Super Cup twice. Gazzaev becomes the most titled Russian football coach, his success has not yet been surpassed.

The main achievement of the “red-blues” was the triumph in the fight for the UEFA Cup in 2005. The team is on the way to it Russian club beat such giants as Benfica and Parma, reaching Sporting in the final.

Despite the fact that the game took place at the opponent's home stadium, the army team won with a score of 3:1. Goals were scored, and. Moreover, each of the balls ended up in the Sporting goal after a pass from Daniel Carvalho. CSKA legionnaire named best player duel. The CSKA goal was defended by a 19-year-old, whose debut in the team took place just two years earlier.

On the eve of the famous coach’s departure from CSKA, ITAR-TASS reported that the club’s management offered Gazzaev to raise his salary to 3.5 million rubles. per month, but he refused to stay. In 2009 he moved to Ukraine and coached the capital's Dynamo. That same year, the team won the national Super Cup, and a year later the championship. Since 2011, Gazzaev became the president of FC Alania. After the club ceased to exist, he became involved in politics.

The coach's wife's name is Bella, the marriage took place in 1976. The couple raised three children: two sons, Vladimir and Aslan, and daughter Victoria.

The athlete’s height at the time of playing for the USSR national team was 173 cm, weight – 74 kg. He does not maintain Instagram; his hobby is reading historical books.
