“Emotions were off the charts! Midnight was approaching and about 400 “madmen” were preparing to go into the darkness, into the mud,...

March 29, 2018

An open meeting entitled “Everything you wanted to know about triathlon, but were afraid to ask”...

I can’t remember how and when I decided to sign up for the 50K distance in Suzdal, I think it was recommended to me by a friend who later abandoned this idea.

Before describing the race itself, it is customary to write about training. It was not possible to prepare thoroughly. At the beginning of May, during the first long workout of the season, I injured my left ankle, I seriously treated it for three weeks, the only training I did was swimming and cycling, as I had difficulty even walking, and in the third week I did a couple of light running runs. And went to Olympic distance Triathlon in Bronnitsy on June 4. And there they also replaced swimming with running. This was my first duathlon, everything went fine. As soon as I started full-fledged training, I again received a household impact injury to the same part of the ankle. Coach Dmitry Bregeda had to make adjustments again training plan. He did it super professionally, squeezed out everything he could in the remaining time. I ended up having several interval training, several strength ones and three long ones, 21, 27 and 35 kilometers, I practically didn’t run simple ones at all. The weekly travel is no more than 50 kilometers (including long ones), except for one week 61 km). I looked up all the information about GRUT from previous years on the Internet, checked the route on Googlemaps, watched a bunch of videos on YouTube, and was glad to see some of the authors at the race with my own eyes. Before going to bed I scrolled through the route and even had some ambitions.

The idea that everything would go wrong appeared very remotely at the briefing on the evening of July 22. Mikhail Dolgy said that there would be a lot of water, something about pontoon bridges, I thought he meant water in the rivers, maybe I think the fords will be a little deeper...

The best music track for understanding what is happening while reading: 100 Watt vipers - Dirt road blues.

It’s a cool, sunny morning on July 23, and I’m slowly getting ready for the race. The view from the room is exactly at the starting point. I scoop the instant porridge from a glass and watch as Mikhail Dolgiy counts down the seconds until the start of the 100K distance:

  • Five, four, three, two, one, go!!! - Mikhail’s voice contains a huge amount of energy and joy from the fact that the race has begun. The number of people is impressive, the stream of athletes, like a snake, is rapidly crawling into the distance...

I was daydreaming, looking at my watch, finishing my tea in one gulp and methodically putting on my gear, having previously rolled around in Vaseline. The time was running out, although everything was ready in advance - a 1.5-liter hydration pack was filled, 6 squeeze gels and 4 sis were labeled and placed in the pockets. I urgently eat an extra tomato squeeze on the advice of my trainer - 20 minutes before the start. There is no excitement, quite quickly I learned to get a thrill from these pre-start minutes, to enjoy the atmosphere. The colors, the sounds at the start, there is no such aura anywhere else.

About 700 people registered for the 50K distance. Finally, Mikhail, having climbed onto the starting arch, prepared the firecracker and began the countdown. AC/DC started playing and we ran. Pulse! You have to watch, the coach prophesied: keep your heart rate at 160, first restrain yourself, then run, and in the end be patient to keep it. I’m drowning, I can hardly force myself to slow down - my pulse is 165, I’m still nervous - you can’t fool your heart. I get into the rhythm and begin to enjoy the views of Suzdal exactly as it was written in the route guide on the website: “Exactly after 1 km you will run into the city, passing the Suzdal outpost (Pink Columns), and after a few hundred meters you will turn right, along Spaso-Efimyev The monastery down along the river and again up to the monastery. You are guaranteed a wonderful view of Suzdal in the morning.”

After about 6 kilometers, the trail begins, a hill up the ramparts, which I miraculously walked with my hands on my knees, while the speed did not differ from those who were running, and my heart rate did not increase, and again thanks to the coach for the tips! On Garmin there is an alert every 15 minutes - once I drink 4-5 sips, the second I eat the gel and drink. In general, everything was so cheerful and relaxed until a huge puddle appeared.

    • ABOUT! “The first ford,” someone nearby said, either jokingly or seriously, as if he had read my thoughts. And this is not a ford, it’s just a road, I realized a few seconds later.

I remembered with longing how I discussed with a colleague yesterday at the Expo that I should take spare socks (and I did!), run through the ford and change them to run relatively dry.

And the first ford turned out to be very pleasant and picturesque, many effectively dived into the water, not afraid of getting their gadgets wet. Feeling slightly envious of such spontaneity, sticking out my little finger, I quickly crossed the ford and climbed up the hill, where a volunteer psychologist was cheering everyone on. He called each one by name and each had its own intonation; he clearly felt each athlete crawling up the mountain past him. I gave him a thumbs up and ran on.

Somewhere in that area there was a series of ravines, only one of them was difficult, with a rather sharp descent, many were afraid to run down, they crawled in the manner of the girl from The Exorcist, someone slid down on their butts, it’s bad that they had to wait for them. The brave girl Maria in a blue T-shirt ran downstairs, and I followed her. We ran side by side for some part of the distance, an evil fate haunted me - as soon as I overtook her, my shoelace came undone, I stopped, lost about 30 seconds, then I caught up and the shoelace was tied again, but on the other leg. In general, the shoelaces got untied on the highway about five times despite the double knots; it’s worth thinking about how to deal with this in the future. It’s very disappointing to let people you recently overtaken pass because of a shoelace, but overtaking on such a track is expensive and very energy-consuming. I only remembered that there was some kind of “Tesla Challenge Cascade” when I ran to the finish line, I didn’t notice it... An endless swampy path, mud and ankle-deep water - periodically, hummocks and grass as tall as a man - always, ford, and again endless grass that makes you feel like you are running in a tunnel, your brain becomes dull several times faster. Where is the classic here - straighten your chest, straighten and relax your shoulders, look forward, there is nothing of this at all - every second you look for a more comfortable place to step. It’s convenient to run in a group - someone is ahead, the rest are easier, such swamp drafting. Like cyclists, we warn about obstacles such as “branch” and “pit” (and there were holes in one area, probably dug by muskrats). I flew through the first two food stations; I don’t really understand athletes who stop at each checkpoint for such short distances and leisurely eat and fill themselves with water. Sotochniks can do it, but for us, it’s nothing at all.

A short respite in front of the forest in the form of a hard road. The forest is beautiful, we were running along some abandoned track, or it was something like a fire ditch. Some people managed to notice the strawberries, but I didn’t. We overtook our neighbors.

Look how the fifty kopecks are loaded,” they muttered dissatisfiedly. A completely clear turn to the left and we run out of the forest. By the way, I never wandered on the highway; the markings were clearly visible at 50K.

Due to lack of training back surface My hips started to hurt closer to the twentieth kilometer, after the thirtieth the muscles below my knees periodically cramped - my calves, my feet, it was exhausting. I was hit closer to the 35th kilometer, the first psychological barrier was the longest workout.

Again a food point, at the road bridge. What kind of divine water is there, not like my warm water in the hydrator, it’s cold there, scooped straight from a cut-off 20-liter bottle. I drank a glass and ran on.

Before the last ford, my left calf cramped wildly, I screamed, stood up and hobbled to the ford. The water helped, plus I stumbled somewhere and went to the swimming stage, I get out, someone grabs my leg in the water from behind, I break free, and they pull me off again. “Good, damn,” I say unsportsmanlike.

“Oh, damn it,” says the man behind him, “I thought it was a branch.” The cramp was somehow forgotten due to the excitement for the phone, which was lying in the pocket of the Salomon Agile 17 backpack.

The second psychological barrier is 42 kilometers, I have never run more than that. I remember exactly how I marked 42200 on the clock. But I could no longer congratulate myself on this. I heard obscenities in my head, as well as the thoughts “when will this all end”, I’m not exaggerating - I ran and thought like a broken record: “when, when...”. I began to forget when I ate and when I drank. He fell three times. I had headphones hanging around my neck, which I never turned on, and the thought of any music made me sick, everything in general made me sick. And then I broke down for the first time - for the first time I began to take a step, for a short time, no more than a minute, but this made me hate myself. I did this 4-5 times in total. The last food item, well, here I drank isotonic water and water and even ate an orange, there was some kind of animal need for an orange. And then he ran without stopping, but he ran slowly, there was no strength to speed up, just to run, just not one step. At these stages, 20 - 30 people overtook me, some of them were in their thirties, but I didn’t notice it and suffered greatly, I was not used to such a turn.

  • So again, fuck it, these are the thoughts that were swirling around.

Here the same Maria, because of whom the laces were overtaking me, tried to catch on, lasted for half a kilometer, then fell behind. How clearly she ran, amazing willpower and character, it was clear from her face that it was hard for her no less than mine, but I fell behind.

We are running through the endless, long, huge Suzdal.

  • “We’ll meet at the finish line,” another overtaking person tells me sarcastically. “Bitch,” I think kindly and without personalities, what kind of motivation is this, I feel even more like a rag, but I can’t improve. Just to run. Such a meditative running trance.
  • “Let’s speed up,” one of the fans shouts on the territory of Helio Park. This helped, I accelerate with my left calf cramped and put my head in the ribbon of the outstretched medal. I take water. I automatically go up to the tent to put a stamp on the medal. 50 K!!!

There was no line for buckwheat yet, so I stuffed it into myself. I wanted cola, but it wasn’t sold anywhere, I found a tent from the Hotel at the expo, they sold Rich juice at wild prices, more expensive than in Domodedovo. Non-alcoholic beer didn’t work, it’s bad manners to serve non-alcoholic beer after the race, although maybe someone likes it (although who might like it?). And then there was a bathhouse and swimming in the pond, then another bathhouse. I stopped walking like Robocop on the third day, which is much better than after my first marathon in 2016. He was not injured, only two nails were damaged, and those were already damaged.

So, when's the next race?

Result: 52.2 km according to the clock, time 05:30:37. 80 out of nearly 600 finishers. Not bad, but I lost to the leaders for more than an hour. Equipment:

  • Garmin 935 watch with heart rate monitor.
  • bandana from ranlabs.
  • glasses (they helped a lot against midges and branches).
  • Reebok tank top (my favorite, it feels so good).
  • Asics running shorts.
  • CEP gaiters.
  • Socks SER.
  • Innov8 race ultra 270 running shoes (actually weighs 330 grams).
  • Salomon agile 17 backpack (1.5 liter Decathlon hydration pack).
  • squeeze tomat gels 6 pcs and SIS with electrolytes 4 pcs (ate all).
  • concentrated isotonic athletic nutrition in 3 shots (ate 2).
  • salt tablets (ate 3).

Traditional thanks:

To my wife and sons for putting up with all this, especially my wife. To my coach and friend Dmitry. To my colleague and friend Vakhtang, for your support. Mikhail Dolgy and his entire team for a well-organized running festival. My friend Mikhail, who told me about this trail, but, unfortunately, did not run with me, but supported me by frantically training in the Elbrus mountains. Thanks to everyone who read this, I hope you enjoyed it.
