The World Junior Figure Skating Championships began on Wednesday in Sofia. Russians are vying for awards in all types, and among the favorites of the tournament in women's single skating are students Eteri Tutberidze, one of which performs elements on this moment unattainable for any of the figure skaters on the planet, including Olympic champion Alina Zagitova.
When the current world junior champion Zagitova fought Evgenia Medvedeva in the Olympic Gangneung, the 13-year-old winner of the Junior Grand Prix Final Alexandra Trusova at the final of the Russian Cup in Veliky Novgorod, for the first time in the history of domestic women's figure skating, she performed a quadruple jump cleanly - a quadruple Salchow, which she stubbornly attempted every official competition, starting with the first stage of the Junior Grand Prix in Brisbane.
“I hope that during the season she will do it in competitions in a pure performance,” said Daniil Gleikhengauz, coach and choreographer of the Tutberidze group, back in the fall.
“I want to do something first in the world,” Trusova herself told RIA Novosti in December, when she won the Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, but again failed to qualify for the quadruple Salchow. “That’s why I’m learning both the triple Axel and the quadruple toe loop. That’s all.” the remaining quads."
At the moment, apart from Trusova, none of the figure skaters on the planet performs the quadruple jump at official competitions.
In Sofia, Trusova started as the favorite of the tournament, and in the free program she must attempt two quadruple jumps - a Salchow and a sheepskin coat. She performed the four-revolution sheepskin coat cleanly for the first time in training in mid-December; at competitions she attempted this element only once - in the same National Cup final.
She entered it 11 seconds after a superbly executed Salchow; during landing her skate slipped, and only an excellent tuck prevented the athlete from hitting her face on the ice. The element, to Alexandra’s credit, was still counted, despite the total “minus 3”.
She skated the rest of the program in a hurry and not as confidently as usual. And in the second half, Trusova has a triple lutz-triple loop cascade, which now almost plays a decisive role in Zagitova’s “adult” successes. At the Olympics in South Korea This cascade was the most difficult element for the skaters; at the Junior World Championships in Bulgaria it will become only the third - after Trusova’s two quadruples.
One of Trusova’s two main rivals in Sofia will be another student of Tutberidze, 14-year-old Alena Kostornaya, who lost to Alexandra in December's Grand Prix Final in Japan, and who admits that "second place is as common as any other place except the main one."
“The first is the feeling that you are the best. You can say “you won” only in one case. And when you are second, it means that you didn’t work somewhere, because someone did better than you,” said Kostornaya in a December interview with RIA Novosti after winning bronze at the “adult” Russian championship. The first adult tournament in my career.
Kostornaya does not yet have super complex cascades, but she performs technically intensive programs with a grace that is mature beyond her years. In the future, the skater is predicted to see a significant increase in component scores. During Olympic Games Kostornaya won the final of the Russian Cup in the adult segment, while Trusova competed in the category of candidates for master of sports, scoring 216.70 points.
But a little before that, at the end of January, Kostornaya lost to Trusova at the junior national championship in Saransk (211.51 versus 212.09 points). Then Kostornaya, who outwardly radiated steely confidence, failed her triple Lutz in the short program, and Trusova made a mistake only once - on the quadruple Salchow.
The third representative of Russia, 17 years old Stanislava Konstantinov also claims to be awarded at the Sofia Championship. At the national championship in December, the student of Valentina Chebotareva, perhaps, finally, in the eyes of experts, moved from juniors to adults, becoming third in the free program after Zagitova and Maria Sotskova.
Konstantinova develops smoothly. “In general, I never force things with students. I don’t give a lot of workload. Therefore, at 13-14 years old, they are simply not able to skate the way, for example, Eteri Tutberidze’s girls skate - they need time,” Chebotareva said in an interview with RIA Novosti , denoting his philosophy as follows: " Big sport should not start too early."
Competition for the Russians will mainly come from the Japanese Rika Kihira, who is capable of two triple Axels in one program, as well as her compatriot Mako Yamashita.
Trusova received 72.03 points for her performance on Friday; second place was taken by another Russian representative, Alena Kostornaya (71.63). Japanese Mako Yamashita (66.79) rounded out the top three. Another one Russian figure skater Stanislava Konstantinova (62.63) was sixth.

The favorite in men's single skating is American Alexey Krasnozhon, who won last Final Junior Grand Prix. The skater performs a free quadruple loop, but does it dirty.
Russians' hopes are tied to figure skater Tutberidze Alexey Erokhov, who is able to perform three quadruples in a free program. Erokhov failed the Nagoya Grand Prix Final, becoming fifth, but won the junior national championship in Saransk, making a purely cascade of quadruple and triple sheepskin coats. An experienced junior will perform in the Bulgarian capital Roman Savosin and debutant Arthur Danielyan, who beat the strong Makar Ignatov and Vladimir Samoilov at the national championship, who performed well at international competitions this season.
Alexey Erokhov takes second place after short program in men's single skating at the World Junior Championships in Sofia.
Erokhov received 76.54 points for his performance. American figure skater Alexey Krasnozhon is in the lead (80.28). The top three is completed by Japanese Mitsuki Sumoto (72.94).
Two other Russians Artur Danielyan (69.15) and Roman Savosin (65.36) are in 8th and 12th positions.

IN pair skating Russian couples won the entire podium. It is interesting that the silver medalists of the Nagoya Grand Prix final, Russians Apollinaria Panfilova and Dmitry Rylov, were unable to qualify for the World Championships, since they finished only seventh at the national junior championship.
But Nagoya bronze holders and defending champions Russia among juniors Daria Pavlyuchenko and Denis Khodykin in ranks. They argued for gold first of all with the already experienced Anastasia Mishina, performing in tandem with Alexander Gallyamov.
Looked like dark horses Polina Kostyukovich and Dmitry Yalin, who marked the beginning of the season with the only fairly clean quad twist in junior skating at the stage in Zagreb, where they took first place, but at the tournament in Gdansk they failed their free program, became only sixth and did not make it to the Junior Grand Prix Final. The bronze medal at the Russian Championship breathed new strength into the guys from the famous Velikov group.
As a result, Daria Pavlyuchenko and Denis Khodykin won gold. Based on the results of the short and free programs, they received 180.53 points. Polina Kostyukovich and Dmitry Yalin (167.99) took second place, and Anastasia Mishina and Alexander Galyamov (167.24) completed the top three.
Sergei Dobroskokov's students Daria Pavlyuchenko/Denis Khodykin won gold, silver and bronze were won by the pairs of the group Nikolai and Lyudmila Velikov and their grandson Vasily Velikov - Polina Kostyukovich/Dmitry Yalina and Anastasia Mishina/Alexander Gallyamov, respectively.
“Our couples performed very well, I’m pleased. Although at the beginning of the season there was nothing to predict this. For nine years it was not completely Russian pedestal at the junior world championships. The first step has been taken,” Velikova said over the phone.
“All three pairs had a chance for gold, it was important to skate the free program with fewer mistakes. None of the championship medalists are ready to compete at the adult level yet, but everyone has the prospect of success. All three pairs are very good and have a future,” - added the specialist.
Daria Pavlyuchenko, performing in a duet with Denis Khodykin, is working on complicating the jumping part in the Eteri Tutberidze group, where 2018 Olympic champion Alina Zagitova and Pyeongchang silver medalist Evgenia Medvedeva train, the pair’s coach Sergei Dobroskokov told RIA Novosti.
“Over the summer we intend to learn a quadruple twist - for this we will do acrobatics, complicate the jumps - do a parallel triple flip or lutz, plus a “3-3” cascade of sheepskin coats, and, possibly, a “3-3-2”, as well “We’ll complicate the support,” Dobroskokov said over the phone. “If we can master this over the spring and summer, then it makes sense to reach a higher level.”
“To improve her jumping part, Dasha goes to training with Eteri Tutberidze, and in this group they help her a lot,” the specialist continued. “And Dasha herself is happy to consult with Eteri. Denis can do jumping without any problems, since he was a good singles skater. The question now is Dasha, she needs quite short time master new jumps. Salchow and sheepskin coat in pair skating have been studied everything, I think that the time has come for the loop, lutz, flip and “3-3” cascade.
According to Dobroskokov, “quadruple throws will continue to be practiced in pair skating, but the coaches will approach them in a targeted manner.” “We are not thinking about it yet, but complicating other elements is necessary,” the coach noted. “There is no other choice, since it is not interesting to be extras. The age of the guys allows them to compete in juniors, but they cannot stay too long at this level, because those who “stay too long” will later , as a rule, do not persist for a long time at the adult level."

The winners of the Grand Prix Final and the national junior championship came to claim ice dancing gold Anastasia Skoptsova and Kirill Aleshin. Earlier, the skaters noted that the goal of performing at the Junior World Championships is victory. “Any athlete comes to every competition to win, regardless of previous victories or defeats. Of course, we will go to the World Junior Championships with the same goal. We will try to adequately represent our country,” Aleshin said.
Russia was also represented in Bulgaria by creative duos Sofia Shevchenko/Igor Eremenko And Arina Ushakova/Maxim Nekrasov. Americans Christina Carreira/Anthony Ponomarenko also fought for a place in the sun.
Skoptsova and Aleshin, who became first in the short dance on Wednesday, won the free dance on Friday (88.71 points) and with a score of 155.15 points in the sum of two programs became the winners of the tournament. Americans Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko (147.68) took second place, the Russians rounded out the top three. Arina Ushakova and Maxim Nekrasov (146,88).
A week later, on March 19, 2018, under the auspices International Union The World Figure Skating Championships kicks off for skaters in the fashionable capital of Milan. The dancers' competition will last until March 25.
This is not the first time Italy will host figure skating competitions. Eight years ago the World Championships took place in Turin. And in 1951, the world championship was also held in Milan. The current championship will be held in one of the most famous Milan sports complexes, Mediolanum Forum di Assago. The building with an area of 40 thousand square meters with three-level stands can accommodate more than 11 thousand spectators. The unique forms and innovative architecture of the Mediolanum Forum were awarded the European Prize in 1994.
Athletes will compete in four categories: men's singles, ice dancing, women's singles and pairs. All participants will present short and free programs. Maximum quotas for upcoming competitions have teams from Japan, Russia, China and the USA.
In ice dancing this year, Maya and Alex Shibutani, Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitry Solovyov, Anna Cappellini and Luca Lannote, Gabriela Papadakis and Gimem Cizeron, as well as Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will compete. For women, Caitlin Osmond, Satoko Miyahara, Evgenia Medvedeva, Anna Pogorilaya, Mirai Nagasu, Maria Sotskova will perform. In men's single skating, spectators will see performances by Mikhail Kolyada, Boyan Jin, Shoma Uno, Yuzuru Hanyu, Favier Fernandez, Nathan Chen. Pairs at the 2018 World Championships: Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov, Vannesa James and Morgan Cipres, Alena Savchenko and Bruno Massot, Megan Duhamel and Eric Redford, Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, Sui Wenjing and Han Cong.
The 2018 World Figure Skating Championships logo was created based on the famous “da Vinci knots” - a complex pattern that the outstanding creator often used in his works. The most famous ornament adorns the ceiling of the “Delle Asse” hall in the Sforza Castle in Milan. Scientists have repeatedly compared the ornament with esotericism, and it has also been suggested that the double spiral, symbolizing infinity and victory, may be a symbol of power. Mysterious curls of knots are associated with the marks left by figure skaters on the ice while spinning, and they are also similar to the invisible graceful traces of the movements of the hands of athletes performing ice dancing. The red lines of the logo symbolize the passion and will of the skaters on the path to victory, the curves of the lines are a symbol of blue ice.
The competitive program of the 2018 World Figure Skating Championships will begin at 12:45 Moscow time with performances by women with free program, reports the Rosregistr website. It will take place at 20.00 solemn ceremony discoveries. From 20:45 pairs will take to the ice with a short program.
