A fish that lives in the ground. Protopter is a fish that sleeps in the ground. Everyone has agreed: High-profile details on Goncharuk’s resignation have been revealed

Ghana, West Africa. If you ever see Ghanaians picking up picks and shovels and saying they are going fishing, don't be surprised. The way it is.

They are going to get protoptera - amazing lungfish. Protoptera became famous for something that no other fish in the world can do: sleep in the ground. Every year, when reservoirs dry up, protopters burrow into the ground, where they spend more than six months. With the onset of rains, the protopters wake up and go outside.

With the onset of the dry season, the protopter begins to prepare for hibernation. During this period, he digs a nest for himself, where he will subsequently spend 6-9 months or much more until water appears again. This fish digs its burrow with its mouth, throwing out crushed soil through the gill slits. And when the “bedroom” is ready, the protopter climbs into it and remains there until the water completely subsides.

In the nest, he occupies such a position that he can lean out of it from time to time to breathe, and then, without turning around, go back. During such piston movements, the hole will gradually become clogged with soil until it completely closes the entrance hole. When this happens, the fish will stop sticking out, but will poke its muzzle into the resulting “plug.” In this way, it will create an earthen “cap” at the entrance, which, when the water dries completely, will become covered with cracks. Air will leak through them, allowing the fish to breathe throughout hibernation.

And after the entrance is walled up, the protopter will begin to secrete a huge amount of mucus in order to maintain the necessary humidity.

For example, dark protopters living in the Congo Basin do this on the surface of the ground, creating a special mucus cocoon around themselves.
