Naval Pentathlon

The Naval Pentathlon includes the following events: 100 m freestyle swimming; 1 km cross; PM-1 shooting; rowing 1000 m on sea yawls; 3 sailing races on sea yawls over a distance of at least 3 miles.

Naval pentathlon competitions are held in accordance with the All-Russian Register of Sports. The nature, program and conditions of the competition in each individual case are determined by the Regulations on the competition.

Competitions are held without taking into account age groups for 4-5 days. The order and sequence of pentathlon events are determined by a separate regulation depending on the availability and workload of the educational and material base, weather conditions, etc.

Directly during the competition, the chief judge of the competition is given the right, for good reasons, to change the sequence of pentathlon events established by the Regulations.

The conditions and procedure for holding competitions in swimming, shooting and cross-country are determined in the relevant sections of the Rules “Military applied sports” and “Shooting from standard or service weapons”. Competitions are held accordingly in swimming pool, dash and on rough terrain.

Competitions in rowing on naval boats are held in class YAL-6 (six-oared yawl) over a distance of 1000 m.

IN sailing races There are 3 class races over a distance of at least 3 miles. The competition is considered to have taken place when at least two races are held.

Rowing and sailing races are held in accordance with the Competition Rules approved in the Boat Signal Book of the Navy (ShSK-70). Clarifications are given in the racing instructions, announced to participants at least 12 hours before the start.

Boat racing

Competitions must be held over straight distances.

The width of each path (“water”) must be at least 15 meters and have a depth of at least 3 meters. The sequential numbering of the “waters” begins from the finishing group. There must be at least 5 meters between the outer fence of the distance and the banks.

The starting line is set at right angles to the distance axis and is mainly equipped with a “hard start”. The finish line is set at right angles to the axis of the distance. There must be at least 50 m of free water behind the finish line.

Roller oars no more than 3.9 m long with a blade width no more than 15 cm.

During the boat race, the use of fish as supports is prohibited. The distribution of boats is carried out by drawing lots.

When preparing the boat it is prohibited:

  • burn old paint,
  • carry out forced drying of the boat,
  • apply coatings other than paint and varnish,
  • plan and damage the ship's hull.

Boats with a faulty hull, non-standard or faulty sailing rigs, dirty sails, or those that do not have the rigging and boat supplies fully specified in the report card are not allowed to participate in the races. Mandatory items include: an anchor with a rope, an ax in a case, drainage equipment (a canvas bucket and two wooden watering cans), a racing number, semaphore flags, and life jackets for each team member.

Boat crews that do not have the full number of rowers, those who are late for inspection, as well as participants who are not dressed in uniform or who do not know how to swim are not allowed to participate in the competition.

Sailing races

There are three cool sailing races over a distance of at least 3 miles. The two best races count. Sailing races are held in waters away from the shipping lane.

The helmsman of the yawl must have a boat driving license or a yacht helmsman's license.

Sailing races are held in waters away from the shipping lane.

Boats with non-standard or defective sailing rigs, with dirty sails, and not having the rigging and boating supplies fully required according to the report card are not allowed in sailing races, of which the mandatory ones include: an anchor with a rope, an ax in a case, drainage equipment (canvas bucket) and two wooden watering cans, a racing number, semaphore flags, life jackets for each team member.

When holding competitions on yawls, participants are allowed to:

  • carry out cosmetic repairs (wash, putty, paint - provided that the entire hull of the vessel is painted with the same color). Fishing holes and hatches must be in their regular places.
  • use, if provided for in the Competition Regulations, two sets of your own sails, while the sails must be made of a single standard canvas of a single cut, with a total area of the foresail - 14.6 sq.m., jib - 5.8 sq.m.

Prohibited:

  • when preparing the body - burn old paint, perform forced drying, plan the body, apply coatings other than paint and varnish;
  • use metal lanyards to attach the shrouds and halyards, a system of blocks and stoppers to control the sails.

The team representative is financially responsible for damage to the ship's hull and its standard weapons.

The sail area is measured according to the rules of the vessel class.

Every vessel is required to carry a number on its sail. The size of the numbers on the sails should be within the following limits: height – 250 – 300 mm;

  • thickness – 30 – 40 mm;
  • width – 120 – 150 mm;
  • the distance between the numbers is 30 – 40 mm.

The color of the number is predominantly black; red and blue colors are possible on the sails of the second set.

The start, as a rule, is set against the wind, covering the distance counterclockwise (left distance). Based on local conditions, Racing instructions, other distance options may be accepted, but provided that the tacking section is at least 40% of the total length of the distance.

Signs defining the distance of sailing races, as a rule, should be buoys or poles with a brightly colored flag. The flags on the signs limiting the start and finish lines must be of a different color than at the distance.

The width of the start and finish lines must be at least 1.5 times the length of the starting vessels.

When leaving the shore, team crews must wear life jackets during the entire time they are sailing.

Each participant is personally responsible for the proper condition of life-saving equipment and their correct use.

Before going out on the water, the helmsman must check the availability and serviceability of life-saving equipment, the serviceability of the steering, rigging and spar. The rigging must be secured so that the sails can be retracted immediately. When leaving the shore, each boat must contain: all fish and hatches, four oars, four rowlocks, two watering cans, and a bucket. Otherwise, the team is not allowed to sail.

When the wind force exceeds 6 points, sailing is prohibited.

The panel of judges has the right, before or after the “Start is open” signal, to shorten the distance or stop the race due to adverse weather conditions, insufficient wind and other reasons affecting the safety of the race.

If the race has been abandoned, the time for the race must be determined and communicated to the helmsmen.
The starting boat (participating in the race) is the boat that, after the “Preparatory” signal, maneuvers close to the start line.

The race begins with the "Start Open" signal, but the boat must obey the racing rules from the time of the "Preparatory" signal until it finishes and leaves the finish line or abandons the race.

If, at the moment of starting, any part of the sail of the boat, its crew or equipment is on the course side of the starting line, then the boat must sail completely through one of the extensions of the starting line to the pre-start side of the starting line before starting.

If any part of the hull, armament or crew of the boat is on the course side during the last minute before the “Start is open” signal, then, at the command of the judging panel, the boat must return, sailing, to the pre-start side through one of the extensions of the starting line. If the vessel does not comply with the command of the refereeing team, then it is given a false start.

If a vessel, any part of the hull, crew or weapons of which is fixed on the course side within the triangle with the vertices - both ends of the starting line and the first distance sign - within one minute before the “Start is open” signal, then it must be disqualified for this race.

If a boat is accepted at the finish line, but does not leave the finish line and hits the sign limiting the finish line, then it must go around it and finish again on the proper side. The time is recorded by re-finishing.

The boat does not have to cross the finish line with its entire hull. After finishing, she can leave the finish line in any direction.

Recall of ships

Each boat in all races must have a racing number. If, at the moment the “Start is open” signal is given, any part of the ship’s hull or armament is on the starting line or has crossed it, then it must be withdrawn as quickly as possible.

If the number of ships starting prematurely does not make it possible to recall them in a timely manner, panel of judges should give a signal " General review» for all starting ships. A vessel recalled or returning after a false start must return to right side starting line, going around one of the signs limiting the starting line, giving way to starting vessels. Once the vessel has returned to the correct side, its rights to the road are restored.

General restrictions

These rules come into force from the moment the “Preparatory” signal is given.

If a vessel having the right of way did not take all measures to prevent a collision that caused material damage to the vessels, then it is disqualified like the other vessel.

A vessel that has the right of way and is forced to change course has the right to protest.

Until the vessel has started and passed the starting line, any actuation that causes the other vessel to change course to avoid collision must be done slowly so as to give the windward vessel room and opportunity to give way. The leeward vessel must not be carried steeper than the close-hauled racing course.

Before or after the end of the race, a vessel must not cause dangerous interference to a vessel in the race.

If a vessel under sail does not follow the proper course, then it should not interfere with the vessel, which is justifying itself for its violations.

A vessel having the right of way in relation to another vessel may change its course only so as to enable the vessel to give way. In this case, the vessel having the right of way must not interfere with the yielding vessel. The exception is when the right-of-way vessel: lies on the proper course to start (while it is on the starboard tack, and the other vessel is on the port tack); or go around the sign.

Walking the distance

The racing instructions may set a target time for completing the course. As a rule, it is set based on the minimum speed for ships of one nautical mile per hour. Based on local conditions, the racing instructions may set a different control time. The race is considered completed for all participating vessels if the first one at the finish meets the control time and follows the rules.

The vessel must sail the course, rounding or rounding each mark on the prescribed side and in the sequence prescribed by the sailing instructions. The rope representing the boat's path from start to finish must, after tension, lie on the prescribed side of each mark, touching each turning mark. If the vessel does not comply with this requirement, it is subject to disqualification.

The mark has the prescribed side for the vessel until it has rounded or passed it. The starting line mark begins to have a prescribed side when the boat approaches the starting line from the pre-start side to start, and the finishing mark ceases to have a prescribed side when the boat finishes.

The ship must not:

  • make a landing: on the starting sign before the start, or on the sign that begins, limits or ends the sailing section of the distance, or on the finish mark after the finish and until it moves away from the finish line and signs;
  • force the mark or the mark vessel to move to avoid the pile-up.

If a ship was forced to violate the rules due to the improper actions of another ship, then it must be justified in cases where:

  • another vessel retired from the race or carried out the penalty provided for in the sailing instructions, thereby admitting a violation of the rules;
  • the ship filed a protest against the ship that forced him to break the rule, and it was satisfied.

Recognition of violation and punishment

A vessel that has violated any racing rule during a race must immediately either withdraw from it or carry out one of the possible penalties provided for in the Rules and Sailing Instructions, without interfering with other vessels. But if the ship did not correct its mistake and did not leave the race, then other ships are obliged to consider it as competing.

A vessel that has violated racing rules must immediately correct its error by making a 720° turn.
Determining the results of sailing races.

Before summing up the results of the race, the panel of judges must make sure that the participants who completed the distance did not violate the rules.

The results of participation in sailing races are determined by the highest amount of points obtained in the best two races out of three. If three races cannot be held, the result will be determined based on the actual races completed.

The lag time is counted from the first vessel accepted at the finish. If a vessel finishes first but is disqualified, it will not be taken into account.

In case of equality of results, the advantage goes to the crew having best result in the last qualifying race.

Results in the naval pentathlon are assessed in points according to the tables. A participant in each type of pentathlon is awarded a certain number of points corresponding to the result shown.

In swimming and cross-country, if the results of two or more athletes are equal, the athlete who started in the earlier swim or race has an advantage.

In shooting, personal championship is established by the best result in the last series, by the largest number of tens, nines, etc., by the shortest distance from the center of the worst hole in the last target.

In sailing races, places for crews are determined by the highest amount of points awarded for the results of two best races. If the sum of points for two or more crews is equal, the advantage is given to the crew with the best result in the last qualifying race.

The participant who ultimately scores the highest amount of points takes 1st place in the overall pentathlon standings. The participant with the next highest number of points scored takes 2nd place, etc.

If the total points of several participants are the same, their overall places are distributed according to the best swimming result.

In the general individual competition, only the results of athletes who started in all types of pentathlon are taken into account, with the exception of cases where the athlete cannot continue to compete due to illness or injury, which is recorded by the competition doctor. In this case, the points that he received for past types of pentathlon are counted.

The winners in the team competition are determined by the highest amount of points scored by all team members.

If the total points of several teams are equal, their overall places are distributed similarly to the individual competition, i.e. for the best result in swimming.

An athlete who is disqualified from participating in an event for making a mistake receives 0 points in that event, but has the right to participate in subsequent events while retaining the previously scored points.

For failure to appear at the start (except due to illness), a deliberate attempt to break the rules or a gross violation of competition rules and safety measures, the athlete is disqualified, is not allowed to participate in other disciplines, and the points he has scored are cancelled. At the same time, in the group events of pentathlon (rowing and sailing races), the participation of a reserve athlete is allowed, without awarding him points for the team competition.

The decision to disqualify a participant is made by the chief judge of the competition together with members of the appeal jury on the recommendation of the senior judge for the pentathlon event.

Throwing grenades at a distance is carried out 1 minute after the end of throwing grenades for accuracy. Time for throwing – 2 minutes. Start and end of throwing at the whistle signal. The participant is given 3 attempts. Throwing is carried out along a sector marked by lines, which are a continuation of the sector for throwing grenades for accuracy. Grenades that fall into the sector or on its borders are counted. The location where the grenade falls is marked with a pointer, and the best result is counted. The result is rounded to the nearest decimeter, for example:
53.25 m = 53.30 points;
53.24 m = 53.20 points.

The result of each participant in throwing grenades for accuracy and distance is determined by adding the points received for the result in each exercise. The result of 170 points according to the SISM results evaluation table is equal to 1000 points.
