On February 7, 2014, the XXII winter season opened in Sochi Olympic Games. This is the second Olympics for Russia; the first, the 1980 Olympics, is remembered even by those who were just children when it was held in Moscow. But that was summer, and this is winter - everything is completely different, and again the country was worried, as the first time. The fact that Sochi, the resort city and “summer capital” of Russia, was chosen as the venue for the winter sports competition was initially confusing. However, it immediately became clear that this was just another challenge, an additional reason for pride: Sochi became the first city with a subtropical climate to host the Winter Olympic Games.

Sochi's bid to host the 2014 Games was declared the winner based on the results of the 119th session of the International Olympic Committee July 4, 2007. Traditionally, at the closing ceremony of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, a ceremonial handover took place olympic flag to the mayor of Sochi Anatoly Pakhomov, after which the Russian flag flew over the stadium and spectators in the stands and at the TV screens witnessed the presentation of Sochi as the host of the next Winter Olympics. The performance included model Natalya Vodianova, prima ballerina Ulyana Lopatkina, figure skaters Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov, opera singer Maria Guleghina, and the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev. At the end of the performance, a huge logo of the Sochi Olympics appeared at the stadium.

The 2014 Games were held at two venues. The Krasnaya Polyana ski resort, 39 km from the city, received sports open-air: bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, downhill, etc. Among other Olympic facilities, the Rzhanaya Polyana bobsleigh track, the Rosa Khutor ski complex (its first stage was opened at the end of 2010) and the mountain Olimpic village.

And in Sochi itself a grandiose Olympic park was built to hold competitions in figure skating, hockey, speed skating, curling - in general, those sports that require indoor facilities.

Olympic Park in Sochi included the following objects:

  • Big Ice Arena- hockey, 12,000 spectators,
  • Small Ice Arena - hockey, 7000 spectators,
  • Skating center - speed skating, 8000 spectators,
  • Ice Sports Palace - figure skating, short track, 12,000 spectators,
  • Curling arena - curling, 3000 spectators,
  • Olympic Stadium, 40,000 spectators,
  • Main Olympic Village.

The Organizing Committee of the Sochi Olympics presented the emblem of the Games on December 1, 2009, and on February 26, 2011, the results of the popular vote were summed up and three mascots for the upcoming Olympics were selected - a polar bear, a leopard and a hare. The anthem of the games was a song recorded for Sochi’s application to the IOC by Russian pop stars.

The Olympic Games in Sochi lasted 17 days, 92 sets of medals were competed in 15 sports. The right to host the Olympics in itself means recognition of Russia as a strong player in the international arena. And so big sport's event always contributes to the development of the infrastructure of the region in which it is held, increasing the level of attractiveness of the region for tourists and the international prestige of the host country.

Sochi became the first city with a subtropical climate to host the Winter Olympic Games.

In order to be involved in the most important sporting event in the life of the country, it was not at all necessary to be a member of the organizing committee of the Games. The Olympic and Paralympic Games could not be organized and held without the participation of enthusiastic volunteers. 25 thousand volunteers were involved in the Sochi Olympics.

From 7 to 23 February 2014 took place in Sochi XXII Olympic winter Games (hereinafter referred to as the Winter Games), at which Russia took first place in the medal standings.

The Winter Games were held on the territory of our country for the first time. According to the forecasts of the Russian Ministry of Sports, they were supposed to be the largest in terms of the number of participants and the number of awards. So, took part in the Games about 6 thousand people(participants and officials), of which 3 thousand athletes from more than 90 countries of the world, among whom the 98 sets of medals. For comparison: at the XXI Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, 86 sets of medals were awarded. It was assumed that the number of spectators who will attend the Games will be more than 1 million people, and the television audience that is expected to watch them will be about 3 billion people.

It is curious that the only ones on this moment Olympics held in Russia summer games(Moscow, 1980) were also XXII.

The Olympic Games are the largest international sports competition. They are carried out once every four years under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (hereinafter referred to as the IOC). Organization, events and activities Olympic movement and the conditions for the Games are regulated by the Olympic Charter. The first Olympic Winter Games took place in 1925 in Chamonix, France. From 1924 to 1992, the Winter Games were held in the same years as the Summer Games (they were canceled in 1940 and 1944 due to World War II). The next Winter Games took place in 1994, that is, two years later, rather than four, due to the decision to make a two-year interval between the Summer and Winter Games.

According to the IOC classification, there is seven winter olympic sports(according to the number of International Sports Federations that are members of the Association of International Winter Sports Federations):

  • Biathlon – International Union biathlon (IBU);
  • Bobsleigh – International Federation of Bobsleigh and Toboggan (FIBT);
  • Curling – World Curling Federation (WCF);
  • Ice Hockey – International Ice Hockey Federation (IIXF);
  • Luge (Luge) – International Luge Federation (FIL);
  • Speed skating – International Skating Union (ISU);

Saying goodbye to the XXII Winter Olympic Games, SE special correspondent in Sochi Artem AGAPOV marks with a dotted line the main events and achievements of the Russian team at the winter, hot, ours.

In Sochi 2014, the Russian team collected 13 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze medals. Both in the number of titles and in the amount of awards - 33 - a national Olympic record was set. In Soviet history, the bar of 13 gold medals with a total of 27 medals was set in Innsbruck 1976.

All over the world, the result of the hosts of the 2014 Olympics is compared (but not equated) with the achievements of Soviet athletes, who dominated the Winter Games and won the team event seven out of nine times from 1956 to 1988. IN last time Our Olympians retained the first place (due to gold - 11, in total - 23 - Norway and Germany remained ahead) in Lillehammer 1994. In addition, we will make a reservation that there are now more sets of awards, but the competition is also higher. And Russia is the first.

However, classical music “We are the champions!” should not drown out a sober analysis: that the hosts of the Games under-fulfilled and under-delivered, where they under-delivered and under-delivered, where they under-delivered and under-received. This does not in any way prevent us from paying tribute to the real heroes of the home Olympics. Just like nothing obscures the simple fact: the main start of the four-year anniversary is the tip of the iceberg, it represents the tip professional sports And highlights the many years of work of its elite.

AN UNCONDITIONAL PLUS

ZUBKOV'S GOLDEN DOUBLE

Russian medals (3 types - 2, 0, 0 ): Alexander ZUBKOV/Alexey VOEVODA (twos) - gold. Alexander ZUBKOV/Alexey VOEVODA/Dmitry TRUNENKOV/Alexey NEGODAILO (four) - gold.

Two of the three events belonged to the hosts of the Games; Alexey Voevoda took both titles together with Alexander Zubkov. Taking into account the technologies of bobsleigh, perhaps it was here that, together with the skeleton, the factor of the native field - the Sanok chute - was fully used. In both doubles and fours, the first Russian crew immediately took the lead and after that, if you like, played to hold. In both starts, the deepest disappointment awaited Alexander Kasyanov - twice he came fourth at a distance of 0.03 from bronze, which again was taken both times by the American Stephen Holcomb.

TO TITLE HEAD DOWN

Russian medals (2 types - 1, 0, 1 ): Elena NIKITINA (women) - bronze. Alexander TRETYAKOV (men) - gold.

Russian skeletonists even slightly exceeded the medal forecast, for which thanks to Alexander Tretyakov. His confrontation with Martins Dukurs, although the Latvians do not like it very much, ended in a convincing victory. Four equally fast acceleration times - it also happens that a strong passage of the track with a record in the first attempt - all this gave a golden result. And it worked to highly appreciate the team’s performance in this sport.

MEMORABLE LAST

STIRLITZ SKIING

Russian medals (12 types - 1, 3, 1 ): Dmitry YAPAROV, Alexander BESSMERTYNYH, Alexander LEGKOV, Maxim VYLEGZHANIN (relay race) - silver. Maxim VYLEGZHANIN, Nikita KRYUKOV (team sprint) - silver. Alexander LEGKOV (mass start) - gold, Maxim VYLEGZHANIN (mass start) - silver, Ilya CHERNUSOV (mass start) - bronze.

The men's part of the Russian ski team held the Games according to tradition for the whole country Olympic scheme: I bathed in bad luck at the start and collected everything I had and even a little more at the finish. Both the individual sprint and the team sprint were a test of the “all misfortunes are on our head” series. Obstacles that came under their feet, their own falls, broken poles, falling apart skis - all this left the Russians without medals at all in the first event, to the sadness of Sergei Ustyugov and others, with silver - in the second. The answer to the troubles was given first in the silver relay, and then in the marathon, in which Legkov, Vylegzhanin and Chernousov settled for first-second-third and organized the first Russian Olympic podium. Kra z the fight of Petter Northug.

Like the biathletes, the skiers came out of the Games beautifully, only here the understatement - and this is again confirmed by responsible persons and respectable experts - taking into account all the inputs, remained, even taking into account the fact that the opponents were not at all a mistake. As for women's issues, everything is subtler and more complex. They worked to the best of their ability and gave out the maximum without any awards, despite the seriousness of the competition - this does not add whist.

Other teams had their heroes. Marit Bjorgen won the skiathlon, team sprint (with Ingvild Ostberg) and mass start. With this, the 33-year-old Norwegian became six-time Olympic champion and the owner of ten medals, the most successful woman in the history of the Winter Games. Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk took gold in individual race, publishing in social network X-ray of a broken foot. Swiss Dario Cologna became a two-time Sochi champion three months after ankle surgery. As a result, Norway and Sweden collected 11 ski medals each, the former remained ahead in gold - 5 with 2 silver and 4 bronze medals versus 2 with 5 and 4, respectively.

HAVE QUESTIONS

YOU CAN'T KEEP UP WITH THE "ORANGE"

Russian medals (12 types - 0, 1, 2 ): Olga GRAF (3000 m) - bronze. Olga FATKULINA (500 m) - silver. Olga GRAF, Ekaterina LOBYSHEVA, Yulia SKOKOVA, Ekaterina SHIKHOVA (team race) - bronze.

Adler Arena gave home field advantage to the Dutch. No, the passionate stands supported the Russians first and even second, only then treating the rest of the competition participants kindly. But the ice of the oval, as it turned out, turned out to be somehow Heerenveen , under Sven Kramer and company. Not without this, and also due to skill, preparation and luck, the “orange” in 12 disciplines occupied the entire podium four times and won 23 medals - 8 gold (and these two figures for one event are Olympic records), 7 silver and 8 bronze. Irene Wüst collected biggest catch Sochi awards - five.

The rest received two or three medals at most. At the same time, the fate of the men's "one and a half" was decided by 0.003 - that is how much the Pole Zbigniew Brodka won against the Dutchman Koon Verwey. The Russians joined the rest through the efforts of Olga Graf and Olga Fatkulina. In the men's segment, Denis Yuskov and Ivan Skobrev were unable to please with any valuable metal. Plus or minus the medal plan coincided, with the exception of hopes for gold in any of the starts.

WHO IS AFTER DEMCHENKO?

Russian medals (4 types - 0, 2, 0 ): Albert DEMCHENKO (singles) - silver. Tatiana IVANOVA, Albert DEMCHENKO, Alexander DENISIEV/Vladislav ANTONOV (team) - silver.

Despite all the convenience of “Sled” for domestic bobsledders and skeleton athletes, the home field factor did not work for the lugers. Another, more important component was important here - the technical superiority of the German team. Felix Loch, Nathalie Geisenberger, Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt expectedly and categorically collected all the gold in Sochi, and Tatiana Hüfner took another silver. The Russians still objected with the help of Albert Demchenko. At the seventh Olympics, the 42-year-old athlete added two silvers to the title of vice-champion of Turin 2006. And he left the same question: who can replace him in the near, not the distant future. Italian Armin Zoggeler announced his retirement by becoming the first athlete to medal at six Winter Olympics.

FRAME OF THE DAY

Russian medals (10 types - 0, 0, 1 ): Alexander SMYSHLYAEV (mogul) - bronze.

Canada collected gold-silver in the men's and women's moguls, with a double from Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe (the third of the sisters, Maxime, remained 12th), and in the women's ski cross for a medal total of 4+4+1. The USA took the entire podium in men's slopestyle with a total of 3+2+2, and France in ski cross with a total of 1+2+2. Belarus shot gold in the acrobatics of Alla Tsuper and Anton Kushnir.

Russia took credit for Smyshlyaev's slightly unexpected bronze in the art of descending a hilly slope with turns between two rows of gates. Well, in addition, there is something that cannot be measured by medals - for example, Yegor Korotkov’s finish in the quarterfinals of the ski cross competition (a contact - and dangerous to health and even life - race with various obstacles). Having got out of the rubble, the Russian last push put his hands forward and became the first after Swiss Armin Niederer in a dispute with the Swede Viktor Eling Norberg and the Finn Jouni Pellinen. This shot became the best shot of the day. There was no need to capture the awards after Smyshlyaev’s surprise.

IDLE

IN DREAMS OF TEN

Russian medals (10 types): No.

On the Sochi tracks, Austria was out of competition - 3 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze, pushing the USA (2+1+2), Switzerland (2+0+1), Germany (1+1+1) and leaving behind wedged into the number best Slovenia (2+0+0). Help for the Russians, no matter how harsh it may sound for athletes, will now be four ski resort Sochi. The ability to dash down a mountain still needs to be trained and practiced. Because it’s one thing to skate for fun, as the famous violinist Vanessa Mae did at the Games, and another thing to aspire to something serious. Despite the involvement of many not only our own, but also foreign specialists, our athletes are still far from the achievements of Evgeniy Sidorov from 1956 and Svetlana Gladysheva from 1994 - they are the only domestic skiers who were noted among the medalists of the Games, and even beyond their dreams - to be in the top ten - no one made it to Sochi.

AVVAKUMOVA TEST

Russian medals (4 types): No.

Kamil Stoch brought two golds to Poland, Karina Vogt and the men's team brought two to Germany. But for Irina Avvakumova, the winner and prize-winner of several stages of the World Cup of the new season, the “card” did not go well. In her debut event at the Games, she placed 16th, which cannot be considered a successful Olympic test. However, men cannot boast of such a result. However, the Sochi legacy - the experience gained and springboards - will definitely come in handy in the future.

LAST PLACE

Russian medals (3 types): No.

Norway was unattainable in this event - 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Russian biathletes who for a long time they didn’t have modern springboards for training, and after Vancouver they basically reassembled, they didn’t jump over their heads. And that's putting it mildly. In the “K-95 and 10 km” combination, Evgeniy Klimov finished last, 45th, “K-125 and 10 km” - Ivan Panin was placed in 43rd place in the final protocol; in the team competition, the hosts also remained behind everyone with a huge lag.

NO REWARDS

Russian medals (2 types): No.

Canada in curling is like in hockey. She beat all competitors, so Sweden and Great Britain remained second or third. Russia has men for their debut at the tournament so high level performed well, three wins with six defeats - it was hardly possible to achieve more. But the same statistics for girls is a sign of a game close to failure.

Make discounts for youth women's team Russia doesn’t have to, with victories at the European Championships behind it. At the same time, it was not possible to achieve progress compared to Vancouver (the same 3-6), despite the invitation of the Varangian Thomas Lips as a coach. The showdown with Lyudmila Privivkova before the Olympics and smoke without fire around the mentor with Anna Sidorova during the tournament, when throwing as part of the team, this could not but affect the result. Okay, medals - the Russians should have made it to the playoffs, that’s the opinion of experts, but instead they left the stage early.

ABSOLUTELY MINUS

OUT OF THE GAME

Russian medals (2 types): No.

In the men's Olympic tournament, Russia dreamed of gold, in the women's - "small" gold, since it was impossible to keep up with Canada and the USA. Both of them experienced deep disappointment. If for the beautiful ladies a lot of things came down to the problem of finishing in the quarterfinals with Switzerland, then for Zinetula Bilyaletdinov’s charges everything is more complicated. And it’s not just that our collective, players’ and fans’, high expectations turned out to be our problem.

It’s worth adding to the sad list what I didn’t want to believe - a short bench without jokers capable of shooting, individual mistakes in the play of the defenders, a toothless attack despite all the star power. Pavel Datsyuk pulled Ilya Kovalchuk and Alexander Radulov behind him on one leg, while Evgeny Malkin and Alexander Ovechkin pulled the blanket in different directions. And Zinetul Bilyaletdinov did not come up with a solution to the situation here and in the matter of team play. Individual talents, when tested at the highest level, again did not form a collective puzzle.

The Canadian women's team won its fourth straight Olympics on a 20-match unbeaten streak. Its final with the USA eclipsed many matches in the men's tournament in terms of entertainment and drama. Sidney Crosby and company, under the skillful hand of Mike Babcock, outplayed and crushed all their opponents, suffering the most with Finland in the group round and Latvia in the quarterfinals. In the decisive match, which the opponents came to along their own “northern” path, the “Maples” against Sweden simply took their toll. Second gold in a row, first outside North America in 62 years, and so on and so forth. While Russia was on a downward spiral at five NBA Olympics (the fiasco at the home Games can be ranked lower than the defeat by Canada in Vancouver), the hard-working and collective Finns collected medals at four of them, and the Canadians drew three “stars.”

These were the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi 2014. Hot, winter, ours. Thanks to all those who competed and won, cheered passionately in the stands - our people in the stadiums and volunteers are the same heroes of the Games as the athletes, they created a unique atmosphere - and worried in front of the TVs.
