Why should you take a course on MTT and SnG tournaments?

Classes are conducted in webinar mode, which allows for maximum interaction between trainer and student. During the lesson you will be able to ask questions and communicate with the trainer.

The course consists of two parts: theory and practice. Theoretical classes cover the concepts of the game. The practical part consists of a detailed analysis of game situations. The listener sends his hand history to the coach, and the situation is analyzed in detail. The practical part also includes Live sessions conducted not only by the coach, but also by the players themselves.

Many people are now interested in poker schools and poker in general: is it possible to make money, is it possible to learn, for how long, what is more effective and useful. A couple of months ago I took training, so I want to leave my review about the Poker Academy: I’ll tell you about their offer, training, pros and cons.

In general, it’s worth starting with the fact that I never dreamed of playing poker for 9 hours a day, turning it into a full-time job. I’ve been familiar with poker for more than 3 years, but I only started playing online more or less constantly this year.

I started with the VK application and playing for play money, but then I realized that this was a very stupid pastime. Because playing for real money differs significantly from what happens when you play for “candy wrappers”. This is how I made my first Pokerstars deposit. Well, yes, is there any room suitable for a beginner than Stars? Of course not)) I filled the deposit very quickly.

And I immediately realized that I knew nothing about poker. Sometimes I didn’t understand why my opponents at the table were doing this or that action.

While searching for a school I came across reviews about "Poker Academy". There the students wrote that this is the best offer for a beginner, what is there free education and that the trainers there are very responsive. I thought this is what I need.

So I got to the Poker Academy website, left an application for group training in tournament poker and continued to unsuccessfully play freerolls at smaller rooms. I played, of course, without auxiliary programs, that is, strictly according to my card. Typical freeroller:)

The manager contacted me quite quickly. He asked if I had submitted an application for training and told me about the bonuses that I would receive if I became a student. And I want to dwell on them in more detail, because this is the defining moment in the review of the Poker Academy.

To get into training, you had to make a deposit of $50 at 888poker. After that, I received Holdem Manager 2 as a gift, I had a personal manager who helped me with all issues, and eternal premium access to the site (that is, even after the training was over, I could view recordings of other training sessions from other classes). You could also get 3 individual lessons, but I had to play a lot of tournaments. Well, a lot for a beginner.

The offer is simply excellent. And even knowing and understanding that cooperation with rooms brings money to the Poker Academy, I want to say that this offer is great. There are similar ones on the market, but in my opinion it will be very difficult to beat it. Well, okay, bonuses are bonuses, we need to talk about training.

The theoretical part was quite boring and monotonous. The theory can be found on the Internet very easily.

Everything changed when practical classes began. And I finally began to understand what poker is. Knowledge began to be organized, and actions began to have a login. This is probably the poker mindset. I began to understand when to fold even “premium” hands, and when to field with “deuce” and “seven”. I started to understand the Holdem Manager 2 metrics and figured out how to change the game depending on the stage of the tournament.

The course trainer, Leonid Donleon, whom I also read about when I was looking for reviews about the Poker Academy, also focused on important points psychology: how not to lose motivation after an unsuccessful skating rink, how to be easier about moving and other points. This all helps a lot now, when classes are already over.

For many players, tournaments are the format of choice, offering a challenge that cash games lack, while also providing an exciting opportunity to win big and quickly for a small buy-in.

MTT poker strategy significantly different from cash games. This is due to the fact that in tournaments the level of blinds is constantly increasing and players tactically need to maintain the level of their stack at all times so that it does not reduce to only push-fold decisions preflop.

Before we start talking about poker tournament strategy, we should mention the types of MTTs. There are these types of poker tournaments:

  • Freezeout

This is a type of tournament in which a player is eliminated if he loses his entire starting stack, with no opportunity to rebuy.

  • Tournament with rebuys or re-entry

In this type of tournament, you can buy an additional stack if you lose the starting one. There are tournaments with limited and unlimited rebuys. If a tournament has a limited number of rebuys, then a player who has reached his limit and lost chips also leaves the game. A re-entry tournament is somewhat different from a rebuy tournament.

In a re-entry tournament, you usually have no more than two attempts to enter and always receive only the starting stack. There is also an add-on in rebuy tournaments.

Add-on– this is an opportunity to purchase additional chips, usually for the cost of a full buy-in to the tournament after the end of the rebuy period.

  • Satellite

You do not receive direct cash for winning these tournaments. For winning a satellite, you receive a ticket or entry to a large live or online tournament.

There are also “phase” tournaments. They are similar to satellites in that they also give you the opportunity to go from a small buy-in tournament to a major event. But the distinctive feature is that in the main (target) tournament you will start the game with the stack that you managed to put together in the first phase.

  • Knockout tournament

The peculiarity of these tournaments is that, in addition to the main prize fund, the game also has rewards for “knocking out” players.

A subtype of knockout tournaments are tournaments with “progressive” knockouts. Their essence is that when knocking out opponents, the player’s own bounty also increases. Winners of some progressive knockout tournaments receive more money for eliminating opponents than the first place prize itself.

Tournaments also differ in the blind growth structure:

  • Regular

In these tournaments, as a rule, the starting stack is 100 big blinds, and the blind levels range from 10 minutes online to 1 hour in a live tournament.

  • Deep

In deep tournaments, the starting stack is 150-200 or more big blinds, and the levels increase every 15-20 minutes, which allows strong players to maximize their post-flop advantage.

  • Tournaments with turbo structure

In these tournaments the starting stack is equal to 50 big blinds, the levels increase every 5 minutes. For stable results in these tournaments, you need to have a perfect knowledge of poker mathematics.

  • Hyper turbo tournaments

Tournaments have an ultra-fast structure, starting stacks can be as large as 25 big blinds, and levels typically increase every 3 minutes or less. The whole game comes down to knowing the push-fold, and the winning tactic is to win pre-flop all-ins.

Regardless of the tournament structure you play in, MTT game strategy can be divided into several stages:

Game strategy in the early stages of the tournament

The early stages of a tournament are slow play that requires the player to simply sit and wait for strong cards.

Tight-aggressive style at an early stage is the key to success in tournament poker. Even best players at the first levels of blinds they play according to the ABC poker strategy.

Playing in a tournament requires you to think strategically. Don't risk your tournament life by doubling your stack at the first levels. Remember that prizes will only arrive a few hours after the start of the tournament. You can't win MTTs in the first few pots, so there's no point in putting your tournament entry at risk.

If you win big pots early, you have a slight edge over the field, but if you run into big pots and lose, you'll be left behind by a significant stack or even in danger of busting.

Game strategy in the middle stage of the tournament

Middle stage– time to move from a tight and straightforward game to a more aggressive playing style. It's still not quite the right time to take big risks in big pots, but you should already start looking for ways to gain an edge over the field.

At this stage it makes sense to attack passive players much more than in the early stages, as you now have to fight for the blinds. In the beginning they were small and the field was significant, but now as players get busted and the blinds go up, you have a mathematical and tactical basis for stealing the blinds.

Play carefully and avoid mistakes

The difference between not making a deep pass due to bad luck and being eliminated if you make a stupid mistake is colossal. Many tournament players regularly complain about bad luck, but this is just a lame excuse.

Middle stage of any tournament is a time to prepare for the upcoming bubble, where you can lay the groundwork for a deep run, but you still need to avoid making stupid mistakes.

Strategy for playing on the bubble

Bubble stage– the moment when the game becomes more difficult. On the one hand, you don't want to crash right before the prize zone, but on the other hand, you want to go as far as possible and still have a comfortable stack. Of course, the size of your stack will matter. Needless to say, a short stack will play much differently than a long stack player.

Playing with a short stack

You need to make a game plan and evaluate how small your stack is compared to the rest of the players in the tournament. After this, you must decide what is more profitable for you: wait until the minimum payout or take a risk to get a more comfortable stack.

Playing with a big stack

Playing with a big stack is always much more comfortable at all stages of the tournament. When you have a big stack, you don't have to worry about hitting the minimum prizes, but your main goal on the bubble is to continue to build your stack. You must constantly put pressure on the players with medium and short stacks. The only thing you have to worry about with a big stack is the ability to hit the brakes in time and not give away a significant portion of your chips to your opponents.

Late game strategy

You have already broken the bubble and guaranteed minimum payouts. Now all the competition in the tournament will be to get to the final table. Late stage tournaments are a mixture of luck and skill. You cannot succeed in a tournament if one of these components is missing. There is nothing more frustrating than playing great all tournament and then losing several coinflips in a row and being eliminated near the final table.

At this stage blinds and the fight for them plays a key role. For example, your stack might be 200,000 chips, and the blinds, for example, 10,000/20,000. This means that simply stealing the blinds will increase your stack by about 15%. If you steal the blinds several times in a row, you can increase your stack by 50% without a showdown.

Final table strategy

You managed to reach the final table - this is an excellent result! Now it's time to try to win the tournament.

The start of the final table is the time when you should plan your game. Look for players from whom you can steal the blinds. In addition to the players you want to attack, you should also think about who you are trying to avoid. Any player who has a stack larger than you is an immediate threat.

If you have a small stack, try to double it as quickly as possible. Small stacks often don't even have time to try to place higher. If you are sitting and waiting in the hope of earning a little more than the guaranteed this moment payout, you may be busted first when the blinds eat up your stack. Passive players rarely make it to the final table.

If you reached the final table with a big stack, then you should choose short and medium stacks to attack. It’s calmer and easier to play with a large stack, but you shouldn’t relax and constantly look at the prize money for first place. Constantly put pressure on your opponents to eventually win all the tournament chips.
