Economists from the University of Innsbruck (Austria) Christoph Leitner and Achim Zeileis took an easier route, collecting the results of existing forecasts and basing their analysis on the odds of 26 leading bookmakers in the world.

Scientists calculated the probability of the outcome of personal meetings between teams and compared them with data based on bookmaker indicators. Economists then modeled the entire World Cup bracket and determined each team's chances of qualifying from the group, participating in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, finals and winning.

Thus, the favorites of each group were determined, including the Russian team. The national team has a 64 percent chance of leaving the group, scientists are sure. Brazil and Germany are likely to meet in the final (the chances of this happening are estimated at 5.5 percent). The probability that Brazil will win the tournament is 16.6 percent. This is repeated many times, and then the probabilistic characteristics of the problem being solved are calculated.

In Begg's simulation, the role of random variables was played by all possible outcomes of all matches that will be played at the 2018 World Cup. And the probability was calculated taking into account additional factors - the country’s place in the FIFA rankings, physical fitness its players and other criteria.

As experts note, it is possible to predict match results using Big Data and artificial intelligence, and predictive models based on machine learning are much more accurate than forecasts from bookmakers.

However, as an international group of mathematicians found out, bookmakers, wanting to attract more customers, balance bets and avoid too large losses, sometimes cheat with odds. For example, if many clients place bets on the victory of one team, then the office can slightly increase the bets on the victory of its opponent and thus pull players to the side of the weaker team.

Having analyzed bets on almost five hundred thousand football matches held from 2005 to 2015, scientists have derived a formula that allows them to calculate the true probability of a team winning according to bookmakers.

By applying their strategy to real bets, the authors of the work were able to earn about a thousand dollars in five months. Such a modest win is explained by the small number of bets and their small amount. Indeed, soon after testing the algorithm began, bookmakers identified enterprising mathematicians and limited bets for them.
