When does the Biathlon World Cup start? Biathlon World Cup schedule. The most honest and open

Winter Olympics 2018

Most recently, the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, announced that the capital of the XXIII Winter Olympics will be South Korean Pcheongchang. According to the voting results, this city was ahead of its main competitors: French Annecy and German Munich. The biathlon tournament, which will take place as part of the Olympics, will take place from February 9 to 25, 2018.

2018 World Cup Schedule

The start of the season for Russian fans starts with the final stage of the World Cup, which will take place from March 19 to 25, 2018 in Tyumen. The following biathlon competitions will take place within the framework of this championship:

  • sprint;
  • pursuit;
  • relay race;
  • mass start;
  • individual check-in.

Based on the results of the races, the official rating of participants in individual performances and in the overall standings will be formed. At the season finale, based on the total points scored in all disciplines, the winner will be announced and will receive a cash reward, an international certificate and a special trophy - the “Crystal Globe”.

According to the traditional scheme, the World Cup is divided into several rounds, which take place on different biathlon tracks. As a rule, the duration of one round is on average 7 days.

In the 2017–2018 season, the World Cup will consist of 9 stages, which are planned in the following cities:

  1. Östersund (Sweden): November 27 – December 3, 2017;
  2. Hochfilzen (Austria): December 4 – 10, 2017;
  3. Annecy (France): December 11 – 17, 2017;

According to Vladimir Yakushev of the Tyumen region, in the 2018-2019 World Cup season, the capital of the region may be excluded from the list of cities in which the championship stages will be held. This unpleasant news is related to the decision of the IOC, whose leadership is actively preventing major international tournaments from being held in our country.

Jacques Rogge (IOC President) announced on June 6, 2011 that the XXIII Winter Olympic Games, which included biathlon, would be held in Pyeongchang (South Korea).

I agree with the votes collected, Pyeongchang was ahead of Annecy (France) and Munich (Germany), which also planned to host the Olympics on their soil. The large-scale event will take place from 02/09/2018 to 02/25/2018.

Sad information also appeared regarding the Biathlon World Cup for the 2018/2019 season, as well as 2019/2020.

Vladimir Yakushev (governor of the Tyumen region) said that Russia may lose the right to host the World Cup stages of these seasons on its territory.

“Today a very unpleasant situation is developing, Europe is opposed to our country, similar recommendations of the IOC, which affect the holding of international competitions in Russia,” said Yakushev. – Applications for organizing stages of the Biathlon World Cup that were submitted before 2016 will not be affected. In 2017 and 2018, stages of this great tournament will be held in our country. But doubts are creeping in about 2019 and 2020, it’s not a fact that this will happen, the disposition is as follows - the current situation is far from being in Russia’s favor.”

Biathlon has long taken pride of place among the most spectacular sports. It has long been part of the Olympic Games program, but this is not the only important event for athletes. Every year, long-term competitions are held among them, including the World Championship. The 2018/2019 Biathlon World Cup will traditionally be held in different countries, and one stage of this competition is the World Cup.

Exclusion of the Russian stage of the World Cup

For many years now, one of the cup stages has periodically taken place on the territory of the Russian Federation. By decision of the Executive Committee of the International Biathlon Union, held in Germany on November 18-19, 2017, it was decided to exclude the Russian stage from the 2018/2019 Biathlon World Cup.

For many sports fans and the participants themselves from different countries, the political background of this decision is obvious. With each such action by sports organizations, the role of politics in professional sports becomes obvious. On the Internet and at the competitions themselves, you can often see inscriptions and posters demanding that politicians stay out of sports.

The situation is ambiguous, Russia is not hosting one of the World Cup stages this season, but it is not making a tragedy out of it either. At the same time, people close to the sport joke that where there is a lot of snow, there is no place for ski competitions. They are simply carried out where there is no snow. This is true - very often at the European World Cup stages the ski slope is completely artificial. There have also already been opinions that this was done in order to undermine the confidence of Russian athletes. This can lead to a decrease in their results, allegedly proving their hidden involvement in doping, or more precisely, the fact that they are not currently using it.

General biathlon KM schedule for 2018/2019

The 2018/2019 Biathlon World Cup starts in Slovenia. The first competition will be held in Pokljuka on December 3, 2018. The total length is traditional - about 7 days, so the last races of the stage will take place on December 9, 2018.

  1. Austria, Hochfilzen - 12/10-12/16/2018.
  2. Czech Republic, Nove Mesto - 12/17-12/23/2018.
  3. Germany, Oberhof - 01/07-01/13/2019.
  4. Germany, Ruhpolding - 01/14-01/20/2019.
  5. Italy, Antholz - 01/21-01/27/2019.
  6. Canada, Canmore - 02/04-02/10/2019.
  7. USA, Soldier Hollow - 02/11-02/17/2019.

The World Championships will take place after the American stage of the Biathlon World Championships. Conventionally, this is the longest stage, taking 10-11 days. The 2019 World Cup will be held in Sweden (Östersund) from March 7 to 17. The biathlon season will end in Norway (Holmenkollen). The final stage of the 2018/2019 Biathlon World Cup will be held from March 18 to 24.

Types of races within the framework of the World Cup

For a long time, the list of biathlon competitions remained unchanged. It was formed and it already seemed that it was simply impossible to come up with something interesting within the framework of biathlon competitions. However, not so long ago two relatively new types of racing appeared:

  1. Mixed relay.
  2. Single mixed relay.

These two types of racing are very young in the scale of long-term competitions. The first of them was held in 2002, the second in 2015. Moreover, the latter option immediately became part of the cup stages, and a simple mixed relay race was not held for 5 years after the first race. Both races turned out to be spectacular, so they have now firmly taken their place both at the cup stages and at the Biathlon World Championships.

Previously, the list included only the following types:

  1. Sprint.
  2. Relay race.
  3. Mass start.
  4. Pursuit.
  5. Individual race.

The individual race is rightfully considered a classic of biathlon; it was with this type of competition that the World Cup originated. Also one of the “oldest” types of races is the classic relay race of 4 people of the same sex from each country.

The number of races of each type varies throughout the cup stages. The same individual race, despite its significance, is not so spectacular, so it is held 3 times during all stages. The relay race and mass start are as unpredictable as possible, which is why spectators like them; they are held 5-6 times each over 9 stages. The most common are the sprint followed by the pursuit race. They are held at almost every cup stage.

World Cup Cup Stage

In fact, the Biathlon World Cup breaks the stages of the World Cup, while at the same time being part of it. In 2019, the World Championship will be held for the 53rd time. There were 4 candidates to host it, including Khanty-Mansiysk. Östersund was chosen by a majority of votes. For many years, only 5 races were held within the framework of the World Cup, which have already become classics. Later, there were changes in the number of competitions - a mixed relay was added.

The World Championships in Östersund will become a landmark - now a supermix, i.e. a single mixed relay, will be added to the competition. While medals will only be awarded for this discipline at the World Championships, cup points will not be awarded yet. For the rest of the usual biathlon races held during the World Cup, individual and team points will be awarded as part of the 2018/2019 Biathlon World Cup.

Cup points! In individual races, athletes from 1st to 40th place receive them from 60 to 1 point. In the mass start there are only 30 participants - for 1st place 60 points, for the last 2.
