A MOPEDE FROM A CHAINSAW I have always been interested in homemade chainsaw crafts. A couple of years ago I wanted to check if it was true that from a chainsaw motor and small wheels you can build a functional moped that fits in the trunk (at that time - BMV518). I found an excellent motor with a gearbox from a Friendship saw, wheels from a Vyatka scooter, a piece of 20x20 pipe and part of a moped frame. It happened in a couple of evenings. In order for the engine to start and run, I replaced the carburetor with a moped carburetor from D6. The result exceeded all expectations - a simple and reliable toy entertained my friends all summer. Last spring, I realized that simply repairing a moped was no longer interesting and, wanting to lighten the design, I made some changes. It turned out to be even more fun. And now I’ve exchanged this already tired moped for a complete Malaguti Grizzly 12. I want to push in a more powerful motor, we’ll see... I’ll try a motor from a partner chainsaw. Or, as a last resort, from a Stihl 180 chainsaw.

Pegasus moped and its features

The Pegasus moped attracts attention, first of all, with its fairly low price, and to be honest, the quality of this model almost matches its price. However, Pegasus managed to find its fans, mainly due to its ease of operation.

Pegasus is produced at the Leningrad Northern Plant. This factory specializes in the production of scooters. The model is equipped with a two-stroke 49 cm3 engine AnkurCM-50 of Indian manufacturers with a power of 2.4 horsepower. The power is certainly not great... they are barely enough to reach a speed of up to 45 km/h. And finally, this becomes completely impossible. The moped engine runs on a mixture of A-92 gasoline and SAE-30O oil. Fuel consumption is about 1.5 liters per 100 km. A special feature of the model is the absence of pedals; thanks to the kickstarter, the moped starts without much effort.

The suspension is quite decent for such a small device. The hydraulics are of decent quality, also of Indian origin, and even on difficult roads it does not create much discomfort for the driver.

The clutch is automatic centrifugal.

The levers and switches are also Indian, quite neat in appearance, but their location is rather unusual.

The Pegasus seat may not be particularly aesthetically pleasing, but it is quite comfortable and soft. The moped has drum brakes and spoked wheels.

The disadvantages of the moped include the presence of only one rear-view mirror, which turns out to be a difficult task to adjust, as well as the absence of a central stand.

In general, the Pegasus moped is a device that fully justifies its low price.

How to properly install a chainsaw motor on a bicycle

Get ready for the fact that you will have to spend a lot of effort and show engineering ingenuity to achieve your goal. First, check the reliability of the bicycle, while keeping in mind that when installing a motor on it, additional load will be required on all its parts. All moving parts must be lubricated. After selecting the motor, before dismantling, it is necessary to check the engine for noise level and its performance. In addition, it is necessary to select the engine according to power, for example, a bicycle with a 1 hp motor will not be able to move on its own; to do this, you will have to pedal or go down the mountain. It will be better to use more powerful engines, but they will be heavier.

Let's look at how to install a chainsaw motor on a bicycle. First of all, you need to install the driven pulley on the rear wheel; it will transmit rotation to the wheel from the motor. To do this, take a regular bicycle rim with a diameter slightly smaller (about 6 cm) than the rear wheel, fix it so that it rotates with the wheel. After placing the engine, weld a metal stand made of steel and pipe under the seat onto the frame. Secure or weld the engine. You can mount the engine on the rear of a bicycle rack if its design allows. Use a drive belt to connect the pulley and motor. Chainsaws, of course, do not have engines as powerful as mopeds, but it won’t hurt to assemble a simple piece of equipment.

So, in order to assemble a moped from a chainsaw we will need:

the actual engine from the chainsaw,
frame,
something like a clutch.

As for the frame, any design you like will do. This could be the frame of a small moped, a bicycle frame, etc.

Choose the place to install the motor yourself. This may be a normal place like on a moped, but for this you will definitely have to strengthen the frame with the help of additional labor. To do this you will need a welding machine. But I think the optimal place would be to mount the engine on the trunk. In this case, you will only have to slightly strengthen the rear fork.

Moped from a chainsawThen you need to install the clutch. You can use it ready-made (suitable for any moped) or make it yourself. To do this, you can take the car starter and cut the pads out of it. In general, the thicker and heavier the pads, the better. Then install the carburetor. It can also be taken from any moped. I think any car salvage yard will have an abundance of these parts. All parts should be thoroughly cleaned, washed with gasoline and installed in places convenient for you.

Once everything is installed, it's time to work on the fuel tank.

This can be any plastic vessel with a volume of about 2 liters. Well, of course, a fuel tank similar to the one installed on the small-sized BMV-518 moped will look more aesthetically pleasing. Well... I guess I'll have to take a walk to the car dump again...

Pay special attention to checking the condition of the gas tank. Gasoline must not splash out, as this creates a fire hazard. The engine will be behind you, so you should pay special attention to this point.

  1. Now let's find out how to install a chainsaw engine on a bicycle. It is necessary to make room behind the cyclist, above. To do this you will have to remove the wing. The easiest way to use this scheme is to install a drive shaft, and use a tire instead of the driven shaft. This type of drive is the simplest and most effective; the design does not require the use of a large number of parts. The friction shaft will transmit rotation from the engine; for this, the shaft diameter should be approximately 25 mm.

  1. To install the engine on your bicycle, weld a metal stand to the frame located under the seat. you need it as low as possible, then your vehicle will be more stable in motion. You can secure the motor to the stand in any way - bolts, clamps or welding.

  • bike;
  • a saw with a gas engine power of at least 2000 W - this indicator will determine whether it can start moving. As practice shows, the engine power is 2 hp. It is enough for a motorbike to reach a speed of up to 40 km/h;
  • reservoir for the future fuel tank;
  • cable from an old bicycle;
  • a handle to allow you to adjust the throttle;
  • bolt ties, nuts and other small consumables for creating fasteners;
  • connecting elements for creating a connection between the wheels and the engine.


The process of installing a chainsaw engine on a bicycle is as follows:

How to make a moped from a chainsaw?


The youth dream of most of our fellow citizens was and remains a moped. It develops a higher speed and has a structure that is more advanced than the motorbike described above. Buying a ready-made moped is not a cheap pleasure. We will tell you how to make it from scrap materials.

For this you will need:

  • a motor from a working, powerful saw (in our version, this is the “Friendship” model);
  • 2 wheels from an old bicycle;
  • pipe with a diameter of 2 cm (metal);
  • cable;
  • bicycle sprockets; as well as forks;
  • old spare parts from a motorcycle - a ready-made fuel tank, a headlight, and, if desired, a seat, although this can also be made with your own hands;
  • steering part;
  • gas lever.


The process of creating a moped looks like this:
  • we cook the frame to which we connect the wheels from the bicycle, forks, as well as a gas tank and a lantern;
  • we adapt the motor - the composition of the installation will depend on the configuration of the frame;

  • screw on the gas tank and battery;
  • we check that the newly installed elements do not dangle;
  • We make a chain drive - it will allow the wheels to receive the torque of the motor and move. You can use a belt instead of a chain pulley. But we must not forget that its wear will be noticeably higher;
  • we set up the ignition system - we connect the battery and brake lever to it;
  • adjust the exhaust pipe.

Do-it-yourself chainsaw go-kart: step-by-step assembly


Karting is a modern vehicle that can cover a significant distance in a short period of time. An exclusive kart is the dream of every car enthusiast. You don’t have to race with it: you can easily drive it on rough terrain, on rural roads, and in general anywhere where a larger car cannot pass.

Among the possible equipment options, homemade go-karts made from chainsaws have gained enormous popularity - no less powerful and productive than their serial counterparts. Let's look at it step by step.

Preparatory stage

It begins with detailed drawings and design. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the finished drawing, which will save time on design;


The proposed overall dimensions are suitable for a person of average height. For teenagers and tall people, the design should be adjusted to their individual parameters. For teenagers, you can use a different scheme presented below.


Collecting the design base

This is a chassis, the manufacture of which will require:

  • square pipes (up to 10 m);
  • steel pipes;
  • thick steel plate;
  • equipment for blocking the bottom;
  • armchairs.

The process looks like this:

  • The pipes are cut according to the proposed scheme and welded using electric welding.


  • This is what should happen after welding;

  • the front axle is equipped with plugs;
  • the rear axle is aggregated - it is welded to the frame itself in such a way that its rotation is ensured;
  • the bottom is cut out of metal or durable wood according to the drawing and fitted to the frame;
  • seat - in this case, you don’t have to mess around and take a ready-made one from an old kart or car.

Karting equipment with motor

  • remove the motor from the chainsaw;

  • We make a base for the motor - from a steel plate and a corner. Its pulley must coincide with the last frame structure;
  • screw the pulley;
  • we take 2 metal rods, which we bend at a right angle - this will be the kart steering wheel drive;

  • adjusting the brakes - it is desirable that the braking applies to all 4 wheels. Don’t forget about the brake pedal: pressing the brake with your hands will be very inconvenient;

  • we equip the go-kart with wheels – small-diameter wheels from an old racing car will do;
  • we set up the ignition - connect it to the throttle valve and the gas handle;
  • reliability control, assembly and testing of the finished unit.

Go-karting is a luxury for the average person, but with the help of available tools you can create a budget version of it - a go-kart with a chainsaw engine.


An equally famous homemade product that the domestic “Kulibins” learned to make. To recreate it we will need:

  • a scooter designed to support the weight of the person who will operate it. It is desirable that it initially have a manual braking system. The pneumatic wheelbase of the scooter must be durable;
  • a chainsaw from which the engine is removed - medium and high-power models are suitable.

The process of assembling a scooter looks simplified compared to previous homemade products:

  • First, remove the motor base and secure it to the back of the scooter frame. Make sure that the motor and wheel sprockets match;
  • we attach a manual accelerator with ignition of the chain saw - this way the operator can control the moving process;
  • If necessary, the scooter is equipped with a brake pedal, but in most cases, the lever for manual control of the scooter is enough for its full operation.
  • testing a scooter made from a chainsaw - if it is working properly, the new motorized device is ready and can be used.

Homemade children's ATV from a chainsaw


The last homemade product that we will look at will be dedicated to ATVs. In fact, to assemble an ATV you need similar materials as for a go-kart or tricycle:

  • engine from an old powerful and working chainsaw;
  • gearbox – increases engine thrust and takes over its operating speed;
  • ATV frame – it should be stronger and more stable;
  • the driver's seat is good if you have an old moped seat: a teenager will be more comfortable in it than in a bulky car seat;
  • wheels with rough tread, diameter of at least 34-35 cm each. This will improve the cross-country ability of the ATV and make it similar to an SUV.

If desired, the prefabricated structure of the ATV can be improved to perfection with shock absorbers: the maneuverability of the ATV will increase, and the operating stroke will become smoother.

Homemade vehicles are cheap, but not always reliable. They can only be used in strict compliance with all safety regulations.

The author used a chainsaw engine as a power unit, but you can also adapt a motor from a lawn mower or other tool. No major alterations are required here, you just need to find a small sprocket that is welded to the chainsaw clutch. You will also need a bicycle chain, some screws, a corner and other small items.

- an engine from a chainsaw (possibly with a damaged body, but with a normal piston);
- clamps;
- bolts with nuts;
- bicycle chain;
- a small sprocket (attached to the engine clutch);

- welding;

- headlight, rear brake, battery, generator and other electrical equipment (if desired).

The process of installing an engine on a bicycle:

Step one. We decide on the installation location and remove the excess
First of all, you have to decide where to install the engine. Bicycle designs vary, just like chainsaws. The author installs the engine above the drive sprocket. The principle boils down to using a chain to connect the engine shaft to the drive sprocket of the bicycle, on which the connecting rods with pedals are located. In other words, the engine here simply replaces the cyclist’s legs. This design is simple, and if desired, you can make the bike change gears.



Having chosen the right place, we unscrew it, and what does not unscrew, we cut it off from the chainsaw using a grinder. The author unscrewed the top handle and also shortened the back handle a little. In addition, the top cover and the gas handle were removed. Try to leave the gas tank, throttle cable, and choke in place.

Step two. Making an asterisk
The most difficult part of the homemade product is finding the drive sprocket that is installed on the clutch. To get good towing power, the sprocket should be as small as possible. If you can’t find one, you can try turning it yourself, although you will need good strong steel, which will need to be hardened, otherwise the sprocket will quickly wear out.




Having found the sprocket, weld it to the part of the clutch where the chainsaw passes through the chain, that is, in place of the old chainsaw sprocket. In some designs the sprockets are removed from the clutch, in others they are not. When welding, it is extremely important that the sprocket is secured as evenly as possible, otherwise the chain may fly off, and the wear will be much greater. After this, the clutch can be installed in its place. This approach will save fuel while coasting. However, the rear bicycle wheel is also disengaged, so the bicycle will coast in any case.

Step three. Fastening the engine
An important task is to securely fasten the engine, otherwise, if it comes off, everything can end in disaster. Here you will need corners, and aluminum ones are best, as they are lighter. Choose their number and location depending, again, on the characteristics of the chainsaw and the bicycle. Everything is secured with bolts and nuts. The author drills through the bicycle frame for bolts; you can do the same with the body of a chainsaw.
















Step four. Remaking the front sprocket block
Next you have to remake the front sprocket block of the bike, this is the one with the connecting rods. You can immediately cut off the connecting rods at the root; they will not be needed and will interfere with driving.








Next, take a grinder and cut off the smallest star from the block. Instead, you will need to attach another, even smaller one. It can also be welded. As a result, we get another reduction in engine speed, which increases the traction power of the bicycle. After this, the asterisk can be put in its place. Also cut off the connecting rod located on the other side.


Step five. Throttle and ignition
To control the engine, you will need a throttle handle; you can buy it, make it yourself, or remove it from a moped. Instead of a handle, you can also make a pedal, lever, and so on.

In addition, install the switch in a convenient place and connect the ignition wire to it. This will make it easy to turn off the engine if necessary.


Step six. Chain installation
To connect the motor to the sprocket, you will need another bicycle chain. Adjust it to size by removing extra links. After starting the engine, the author had a problem; the chain kept falling off due to its large length. To solve this problem, it is necessary to make stabilizers for the circuit. For these purposes, the author needed a copper tube, a chain was passed through it, and the tube itself was fixed to the frame. An additional small sprocket was also installed, which tensions the chain.
















Step seven. Installing the running boards
You definitely need to have footpegs on your bike so that you have somewhere to put your feet. The author makes them very simply, from bolts and nuts. Just drill the frame in the right place and secure the screws with nuts.

You can also install tubes on the bolt bars to make the running boards more stylish.

The engine cannot accelerate on its own. But it easily maintains the set speed. Doesn't move. It grabs if you accelerate to about 10 km/h. According to my subjective assessments. A noticeable vibration is transmitted through the saddle to the rear. You need to think about some kind of foam lining. For such vibration is hardly useful.

The idea arose to make a bicycle with a chainsaw engine, purely for pampering.
And at the same time understand the engines. And then, to my shame, I have no experience.

On the forums they mainly write how to do it with the engine from a trimmer (mower).
But with a chainsaw engine - there is no information.
Since it is very inconvenient to use a chainsaw engine for these purposes :)
But since it is cheaper, 2-3 times, in comparison with the engine from a brush cutter (and there is not much money for all sorts of nonsense)

It is quite possible to take a belt with a length in the range of 1600-1700 mm and play with the tension rollers and the height of the engine mounting. 1600 mm is already close to the rear wheel guard. And the fastening must be carried out with an already disassembled engine, i.e. without a gas tank-handle. At 1700 mm, you can try to mount the whole saw directly to the trunk. You can use a domestically produced belt GOST 1284.1-89. The type of section used is K. But it has a slight difference from foreign PJ in pitch.

2. Driven wheel - a 20" bicycle rim, attached directly to the spokes of the rear wheel. I took the cheapest steel one with a width of 30 mm. Drill holes of 4.2 mm along the perimeter of the side of the rim opposite the spokes. Fasten with M4 screws 30 mm long. Adjust the required number M4 nuts to achieve the desired offset of the driven wheel from the tire tread.
You can secure it either using 2 washers or a steel plate folded in half with a hole diameter of 4.2-4.5 mm. I took as a blank a steel pressure plate for pipes or wires with numerous perforations with holes of just the right diameter.

9. Belt tension rollers. I recommend doing two. The first, on the one hand, is rigidly fixed, gives direction to the belt and increases the angle of coverage of the drive pulley. And the second one is spring-loaded. Role: constancy of belt tension under various inaccuracies of the system and also gives the direction of the belt and increases the angle of coverage of the drive pulley. Two versions were created, the first for a 6x19x6 mm bearing and the second for a 10x22x6 mm bearing. The first version seemed a little flimsy to me. Therefore, a more reinforced version 2 was created. But on the current sample, the version with a 6x19x6 mm bearing stands as a rigid roller, and with a 10x22x6 mm bearing as a spring-loaded one. Both worked fine at the time of the test drive.
