I lived there for two years, and I felt comfortable there. I studied Korean culture well. Someone thinks that in Russia there are bears on the streets and minus 20 every day. And someone thinks the same about Korea: they say that there are only dwarfs there, they all look the same, and that these dwarfs make laptops and cars. In reality, of course, everything is not like that. Just like on Monday they woke up at 6 am and went to work, they don’t leave there until Friday. And only on weekends can Koreans allow themselves to “relax”. I lived with ordinary people in an apartment building, fulfilled all the requirements of the concierge. For example, I threw out the garbage separately: one bag with plastic, the second with food waste. We still don’t have this, but in Korea it was already in the order of things. My family felt comfortable there too. The children were absolutely delighted: water parks, Disneyland.

As part of the capital's Torpedo, Yuri Matveev became the bronze medalist of the 1991 USSR Championship, and in the same year he and Torpedo reached the final of the National Cup. They divided into teams - five by five, seven by seven, in short, as it happened, they divided. Instead of gates there are bricks. And adults always took part. My father always played with us.

- On the same team as you?

Certainly! We are losing, I call him to help: “Dad, come out!” He helped.

The rivals were probably not enthusiastic about such help... After all, Alexander Nikolaevich was one of the leaders of the Nizhny Tagil “Uralets”.

Yes, we had no authorities in our yard. Who is stronger is right ( laughs). So my father didn’t encourage me to play football, but he was a role model for me. And so - I received an excellent yard education. Classes end, you come home at noon, throw your briefcase and run outside! In the evening, mom comes home, feeds her, and goes back to the yard. And only when it gets dark, shouts are heard: “Yura! Come on home!”

- What about the lessons?

We tried to do it before our parents arrived. Exactly what they tried... The street came first. And we were all coordinated, dexterous, fast - because we played not only football and hockey, but also outdoor games: tag, hide and seek... running around garages. Now, unfortunately, there is no such yard culture, therefore, it seems to me, the current generation is weaker in physically. And no third PE lesson will fix this, unfortunately. Previously, there were still sections... A trainer for athletics- and the whole class goes to sign up. The chess coach comes and the whole class goes there. Of course, most leave after a couple of classes, but try themselves in something else. There was an opportunity to choose and find a sport to your liking. The whole class was doing something.

- How did you get into football from running around in the yard?

And it came from the yard. The yard coach came up to me and said: “Boy, where do you live?” - “Yes, in this yard.” - “Well, come tonight, we have a team there, there will be a game.” And so I ended up in a more or less organized team.

- And how did you understand that football is not just a hobby, it is a profession, destiny?

This is already closer to the team of masters, at the age of 16. I realized that there is a smell of organized football here and there is an opportunity to get to the top. And “to the top” for me then was our Tagil team “Uralets”; for all the guys, playing there then was a cherished dream. At the age of 16 they began to involve me in training, and at the age of 17 I made my debut in the main team.

- Do you remember the first match as a starter?

What are you talking about? Do they forget this? Along the way, you managed to get an education. Graduated from Nizhny Tagil Mining College. Admit it: was it hard?

Everything happened at the same time - studies and sports... Honestly, it was very difficult. When I went to the training camp, I took with me the author’s textbook “Mining” Borisov Sergei Sergeevich . This was the director of our technical school. I took the book, opened it in the evening after training... And fell asleep instantly. For the fees I read about six pages, no more. Physically, there was no time left for studying. After the season, when all the players went on vacation, I went to study, honestly sat at my desk. Nobody knows if I would have succeeded in football, but having received a mining and metallurgical education, I would always have been provided with a profession in my native Nizhny Tagil. Our belief was this: whoever graduated from technical school became one of the people.

- Were the teachers cooperative? Did you help a rising football star?

The teachers helped, yes. And I always remember the same Sergei Sergeevich with gratitude. At one of the meetings the question of my expulsion was raised. And Borisov stood up and said: “Let us give him a diploma, and then we will be proud of him.” Now I come to the technical school, and my photograph hangs on one of the stands. They are proud, that is.

- And then, as soon as you graduated from college, you moved to a more serious team: Uralmash noticed you...

- “Uralmash” is the flagship of Ural football. They paid attention to me and invited me to join them, especially since they needed a center forward. Then the team set the goal of entering the first league. I was twenty years old at that time.

You very quickly declared yourself as a bright, productive forward. Therefore, the answer to the question “Why were you invited to the capital’s clubs” is obvious. Another thing is interesting: why, after playing a little at Zenit and Torpedo, did you return to Uralmash?

Each time there were different reasons. Somewhere the club did not match my ambitions. He called me to Zenit in 1990 Anatoly Konkov . When leaving there, I was sure that this was a top-level club, but at that time it was a team that no one needed. And I returned. Here they were waiting for me, here is my homeland, my family. Sometimes I returned because I had to help Uralmash carry out some tasks. I just had a feeling inside that the club needed me more.

- Did you regret it? We could play in the capitals.

No. I never regretted it. I was where I was really needed.

- You had experience playing in foreign clubs. And there, as far as I know, everything worked out well...

Yes, I spent a whole season in Turkey, playing for Ankaragucu. I was a coach there Valery Kuzmich Nepomnyashchiy . Then I played for two more years South Korea for Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Both experiences were very interesting. There is a different mentality, a different culture... Turks, for example, are very ardent fans, quick-tempered. We once lost a home match, and after it fans surrounded us... And they really demanded, let’s say, that we answer their questions. They were dispersed, of course, but they still had questions. But if they won, they were greeted with honor, greeted on the streets, treated to Turkish sweets, invited to visit, shop doors opened: “Yura, come in!” They treated me, my daughter... In general, in Turkey there is one step from love to hate, and this step is very short. You can be a hero today, and tomorrow they will already hate you.

- And in Korea?

There's a completely different mentality there. This is a country of workaholics: they get up at six in the morning on Monday and work until Friday evening. But more difficult than the mentality, I got used to Korean cuisine. In the first week I lost four kilograms there; at first I could only eat broth and rice. But once I got used to it, I couldn’t tear myself away. When I had my last dinner with my wife, I told her: “Where should we go: to a European restaurant or to a Korean one?” “Of course,” he says, “in Korean. Where else can we eat this..."

- As far as I know, you really liked it in Korea. Did you have any desire to stay there?

- “Like” is a relative concept. My family felt very comfortable there. There was a nice apartment, water parks, Disneyland, shops. It was the nineties, and of course, the family was better off there at that time. But for me it was just work. And to be honest, I still missed my homeland. I had a contract for two and a half years, and I worked it out conscientiously, and then we parted amicably. Sooner or later you always have to return to your homeland. I never had any desire to stay there.

- Did your wife accompany you everywhere?

Yes. We have been together for thirty years in perfect harmony, we have two children, we already have grandchildren... And my feelings for her have not weakened over the years.

- Amazing - how did you do it?

The fewer meetings, the stronger the friendship ( laughs). We always treat each other with respect. Now our family is already grown up, one of our daughters has a husband and her own family... But on weekends, when we have time, we always get together for lunch and spend time together. We try to ensure that our children adopt this attitude towards each other from us.

"To the fore - in difficult times"

- When did you realize that it was time to end your sports career?

This realization came gradually. You just understand that you don’t want to get up in the morning, go to training camps, you don’t want anyone to boss you around, you want to live your own life.

In general, there was one moment when I suddenly realized that everything had to end. One day I returned home, put my eldest daughter (she was 13-14 years old) in the car, and we went to school. And here we go... And suddenly I realize that I absolutely don’t know what to talk to her about. Then I decided - football is football, but first of all, family. I was scared and just wanted to be closer to my family. Stop traveling around the cities. We need to be close.

Did you immediately have the desire to become a coach?

No. Our football was not at its peak at that time, I decided to look around to understand how non-football life flows. But I soon realized that it was really hard without football. And I wanted to help the players with my experience, to somehow use my knowledge.

- Did you consider other options besides Ural?

No. came to the club president Grigory Viktorovich Ivanov and I say: “If possible, help. Maybe something will come of me.” He made me assistant head coach of the reserve team Igor Vadimovich Kuznetsov , and I began to master the profession. Gradually I got into it. But I really always come to the fore in difficult times. You have to be not only a coach, but also a psychologist, to know how to set up a team at this difficult moment. There were indeed very difficult moments... A very difficult situation arose four years ago ( In the 2013/2014 season, Ural was on the verge of relegation. - “Uralmash” of the late 80s - early 90s, when we solved difficult problems - we reached the first league, then the major league, played there... We had a very close-knit team then, we spent a lot of time as on the football field and off it. Well, it was while playing for Uralmash that I received a call to the national team of our country.

- By the way, about the call to the Russian national team - you played the first match for the national team in new history. How were you called?

At that time I was one of the best scorers in the Russian championship, I played well against CSKA, and his coach was then Pavel Fedorovich Sadyrin , and he was then the coach of the national team. The moment itself remained in my memory for a long time. The main thing in my life is a strong family. Children, grandchildren, beloved wife. Looking back, I am grateful to God that everything turned out this way. And in terms of sports... I started playing football at the age of 10. Now I'm fifty. And these forty years I have been doing what I love. I am happy because my business brings me joy. Football is a game with which I connected my life, and in my opinion, I won in every way.

The officers stood up and surrounded the Cossacks and the captured Frenchman. The French dragoon was a young fellow, an Alsatian, who spoke French with a German accent. He was choking with excitement, his face was red, and, hearing French, he quickly spoke to the officers, addressing first one and then the other. He said that they would not have taken him; that it was not his fault that he was taken, but that le caporal was to blame, who sent him to seize the blankets, that he told him that the Russians were already there. And to every word he added: mais qu"on ne fasse pas de mal a mon petit cheval [But do not offend my horse] and caressed his horse. It was clear that he did not understand well where he was. He then apologized, that he was taken, then, presuming his superiors before him, he showed his soldierly efficiency and care for the service... He brought with him to our rearguard in all its freshness the atmosphere of the French army, which was so alien to us.
The Cossacks gave the horse for two chervonets, and Rostov, now the richest of the officers, having received the money, bought it.
“Mais qu"on ne fasse pas de mal a mon petit cheval,” the Alsatian said good-naturedly to Rostov when the horse was handed over to the hussar.
Rostov, smiling, reassured the dragoon and gave him money.
- Hello! Hello! - said the Cossack, touching the prisoner’s hand so that he would move on.
- Sovereign! Sovereign! - suddenly it was heard between the hussars.
Everything ran and hurried, and Rostov saw several horsemen with white plumes on their hats approaching from behind along the road. In one minute everyone was in place and waiting. Rostov did not remember and did not feel how he reached his place and got on his horse. Instantly his regret about not participating in the matter passed, his everyday mood in the circle of people looking closely at him, instantly any thought about himself disappeared: he was completely absorbed in the feeling of happiness that comes from the proximity of the sovereign. He felt rewarded by this proximity alone for the loss of that day. He was happy, like a lover who had waited for the expected date. Not daring to look at the front and not looking back, he felt with an enthusiastic instinct its approach. And he felt this not just from the sound of the hooves of the horses of the approaching cavalcade, but he felt it because, as he approached, everything around him became brighter, more joyful and more significant and festive. This sun moved closer and closer for Rostov, spreading rays of gentle and majestic light around itself, and now he already feels captured by these rays, he hears its voice - this gentle, calm, majestic and at the same time so simple voice. As it should have been according to Rostov’s feelings, dead silence fell, and in this silence the sounds of the sovereign’s voice were heard.
– Les huzards de Pavlograd? [Pavlograd hussars?] - he said questioningly.
- La reserve, sire! [Reserve, Your Majesty!] - answered someone else’s voice, so human after that inhuman voice that said: Les huzards de Pavlograd?
The Emperor drew level with Rostov and stopped. Alexander's face was even more beautiful than at the show three days ago. A few minutes after the sovereign passed, the Pavlograd division was demanded to go ahead. In Wieschau itself, a small German town, Rostov saw the sovereign again. In the city square, where there had been quite a heavy firefight before the sovereign’s arrival, there were several dead and wounded people who had not been picked up in time. The Tsar, surrounded by a retinue of military and non-military personnel, was on a red, anglicized mare, already different from that at the review, and, leaning on his side, with a graceful gesture holding a golden lorgnette to his eye, he looked into it at the soldier lying on his face, without a shako, with a bloody head.
