Fountain World Clock, Moscow, Russia. My personal photo blog What is the name of the fountain on Okhotsk Ryad

In the 1990s, an underground shopping complex “Okhotny Ryad” was built under Manezhnaya Square, which at that time was returned to its previous name. The cascade of fountains that are part of the Okhotny Ryad shopping complex appeared at that time on the renovated square. They were located around the glass domes of the shopping center, rising above the ground.

One of the fountains is located around the main dome, which is a geographical map with the names of cities. During the day, the dome makes one full revolution and, in fact, it is a clock by which you can determine the time with an accuracy of five minutes in the cities indicated on the map.

Let me explain how this works. The dome with the names of the cities is divided into 24 sectors and rotates around an axis; the lower ring around the sector is motionless and is also divided into 24 sectors, indicating each hour of the day. Each sector has 12 lights, each of which means five minutes. Now we select a city, look at the bottom number (this is the hour), count the lit lights and multiply them by five (these are minutes), as a result we get the time in the selected city.

If you raise your head while under the main dome of the Okhotny Ryad shopping center, you can see the map in this form.

The authorship of this watch most likely belongs to the Mosproekt-2 design workshop, which, with the participation of Zurab Tsereteli, was involved in the development Manezhnaya Square and the underground shopping complex "Okhotny Ryad". The sculpture crowning the dome, which is not difficult to guess, is the creation of Zurab Tsereteli. And it depicts St. George the Victorious slaying the serpent - a symbol of Moscow, which can be seen on the coat of arms and flags of this city.

The sculpture is symbolic. The plot depicting George is associated with one of the many miracles of the saint. George, with his miraculous appearance, saved the royal daughter and many other inhabitants of the Lebanese mountains from death, killing the serpent that was devouring people. In Rus', St. George the Victorious has long been considered the defender of the Orthodox army. The name of the founder of Moscow, Yuri Dolgoruky, is associated with his name. Yuri, Guriy, Yegoriy, and even Rurik are all variants of the name Georgy. During the reign of Dmitry Donskoy, Saint George was revered as the patron saint of Moscow; later, the image of St. George the Victorious is part of the Russian state emblem, and since 1995 he has been depicted on the coat of arms of Moscow. By the way, Moscow itself is depicted on the map as a sculpture of the Kremlin, which can be seen on the left side of the picture.

The World Clock Fountain, like all the other fountains of the square, dates back to 1997, when, on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of Moscow, Manezhnaya Square acquired its final form and the entire fountain ensemble located on it was put into operation.

Paying tribute to the historical name "Okhotny Ryad", designers from the American company Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc., which was responsible for the design of the complex, installed a fountain depicting the goddess of the hunt Diana and her two companions in tunics on the ground floor under a dome with a clock. Each character is equipped with hunting attributes and the game they have caught. Above them rises a huge bowl from which water flows. The authorship of the sculptural composition probably belongs to the same Zurab Tsereteli, and the uniqueness of this year-round working fountain is that it is located below ground level - at a depth of about fourteen meters.

Fountain World Clock: detailed information

Report an inaccuracy in the description

The “World Clock” fountain is one of the attractions of the capital’s center. It is located directly above the Okhotny Ryad shopping complex, at the same time being its dome. What is most attractive and unique is not the design of the fountain itself, but the clock itself, which made the entire structure so popular in Moscow.

The fountain's dome, made of glass, is divided into time zones and covered with the names of major cities. Below the dome with sectors there is a fixed ring with the image of numbers. Having found the desired city name, you can determine the time of that region with an accuracy of 5 minutes, of course, first understanding how such an unusual dial works. The fountain never stops moving. Thanks to calculations, in exactly one day the composition makes a complete revolution around its own axis. At the top of such an unusual fountain there is a sculpture by the well-known Tsereteli, depicting St. George the Victorious defeating a snake, but the author of the fountain itself is unknown.

When you move along Manezhnaya Square, you simply cannot help but pay attention to the dome-shaped structure, on top of which St. George the Victorious proudly sits on horseback.

This is the “World Clock” fountain - one of the center of the capital. It is located directly above the Okhotny Ryad shopping complex, at the same time being its dome. This is not just a fountain, but a real watch, albeit with a unique dial.

The fountain is equipped with a special glass dome depicting a map of the northern hemisphere. It is divided into 24 parts, each of which corresponds to one of the time zones indicating the cities - capitals of states. Each sector is equipped with 12 light bulbs, which, when lit, add 5 minutes to the present time.

The fountain never stops moving. Thanks to calculations, in exactly one day the composition makes a complete revolution around its own axis.

However, this is not just a beautiful landmark. With its help you can easily find out the time in a specific capital of the world. To do this, you need to select a city, and then look down at the ring. This will be the hourly value of this place. Thanks to the illuminated lights, you can also find out the minute indicators. You need to count their number and multiply the value by 5.

Speaking about the fountain, one cannot fail to mention some of the secrets associated with it. For example, it is still unknown who exactly is the author of this work. As for the horseman on top, this is most likely the work of the legendary sculptor and artist Zurab Tsereteli.

Manezhnaya Square March 28th, 2012

Everyone knows about Manezhnaya Square. A huge number of photographs from it are published on the Internet every day. It is here that tourists come every day and begin to get acquainted with the sights of Moscow. But despite this, I will still post some of my photos. Manezhnaya Square is located next to the Kremlin and the Alexander Garden. Here are the exits from the Okhotny Ryad metro station.

Manezhnaya Square was formed in 1932-1937 after the demolition of the block that existed on this site. The square received its name in 1937 after the Manege building, the facade of which forms the southern side of the square. Although in 1967-1990 it was the square of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution.

The Manege was built in 1817 on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Russian victory in the Patriotic War of 1812 according to the design of A.A. Betancourt. But in 2004, the building was badly damaged by a fire and was rebuilt according to the design of the architect P.Yu. Andreev, with a complete change in the interiors and some exterior details. Now this is the Central Exhibition Hall, which is architectural monument federal significance .

Under Manezhnaya Square there is the Okhotny Ryad shopping complex, opened in 1997. On the surface, the fountains of the "Dome" speak about it.

There are a total of 3 such dome fountains in the complex.

There are a large number of fountains on Manezhnaya Square. The complex of fountains “Geyser”, “Veil” and “Waterfall” are very popular among tourists. Sculptural group "Seasons" in the center of the Geyser fountain:

Fountains "Veil" and "Waterfall":

If I'm not mistaken, this is the "Snail" fountain:

On the territory of Manezhnaya Square there is an artificial channel of the Neglinnaya River, which was underground at the beginning of the 19th century. Scattered throughout its territory are sculptures by Zurab Tsereteli based on Russian fairy tales (I visited him in October 2010), installed here after the reconstruction of the square in 1997. The bottom of the reservoir is lined with mosaics.

Sculpture "Fox and Crane":

Sculpture "Frog Princess":

Sculpture "The Old Man and the Goldfish":

The "Grotto" fountain is made in the form of a sculpture of a mermaid lying on a pedestal stylized as a flower bed. Symbolizes the Neglinnaya River coming to the surface and flowing in a free channel.

Several other famous buildings overlook Manege Square.

Hotel "Moscow". This is one of the largest hotels in Moscow, built in 1932-1938, was demolished in 2004 and now in its place there is a hotel, almost a copy of that former “Moskva”.

State Duma building Russian Federation was built in 1934-1938.

The building of the State Historical Museum was built in 1875–1881. I also posted from this museum on my blog.

On May 9, 1995 (in honor of the 50th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War), a monument to Marshal Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov (sculptor V.M. Klykov) was erected right in front of the building of the historical museum from Manezhnaya Square.

Noteworthy is the huge dome right in the center of the square. This is the "World Clock" fountain. It is the main dome of the Okhotny Ryad underground shopping complex. The glass dome of the fountain with the names of the cities rotates slowly and within a day it makes a full revolution.

In the background you can see that the National Hotel (5 stars) faces Manezhnaya Square. The hotel building, opened in 1903, was restored in 1985-1995. A little closer is the preserved facade of I.V. Zholtovsky’s house, built in 1932–1934 (the building itself has been reconstructed many times since then).

One of the facades of the building housing the State Geological Museum. V.I.Vernadsky:

Institute of Asian and African Countries (ISAA) MSU. M.V. Lomonosov:

Manezhnaya Square itself is a good place, especially on a weekday, when there are not so many people here and you can calmly stroll and take pictures for the hundredth time of the sights of the center of Moscow.

And this is the very beginning of the main street of our capital - Tverskaya.

The biggest surprise of the renovated Manezhnaya Square in Moscow is hidden underground. This is the Okhotny Ryad shopping complex, which took 7 years to build. All that is visible on the surface is a glass dome with a large, beautiful statue of a warrior slaying a serpent. The dome, divided into 24 sectors, has a map of the Earth's Northern Hemisphere on it; if you stand nearby for a few minutes, you will notice that it is slowly rotating. The granite barrier around the dome is also divided into 24 sections with numbers engraved on them. Between the dome and the barrier there is a moat with water. This is the “World Clock” fountain, a new Moscow landmark.

Along the lower edge of each sector of the rotating dome there are 12 lamps, each of which corresponds to 5 minutes. In order to find out the time in any of the 24 time zones, you need to find the desired city on the map, then see which sector the dividing line points to. This is the current hour, and the minutes are calculated by multiplying the number of glowing lamps by 5. The system seems complicated, but there is an element of the game. In the evening, the fountains are illuminated and the clock is surrounded by crowds of tourists calculating the time at home.
