Telesport has not yet agreed on the broadcast of the championship games, which begins on Friday, August 18 (the 2017/18 season will last until May 2018). “We are negotiating with our partners, including Match TV, and given the status of La Liga, I think that its matches will appear on air in the near future,” notes Weinstein.

But Russian spectators will still be able to see the first games of the championship. As the head of TeleSport Digital, Ilya Rustamov, told RBC, the matches “Barcelona” - “Betis” and “Deportivo” - “Real Madrid” (to be held on August 20) will be shown on the social network “VKontakte”. In 2016, the championship was included in the top 20 highest-rated sports broadcasts on Russian TV. How did it all start?

The contract for showing Examples was signed in August 2015 “on the flag”. At that time, the structure, now called the Match sub-holding, was primarily occupied with its own organizational issues. Therefore, the registration of rights was delayed until the last minute, and the Bundesliga was finally agreed upon at the end of October.

The international cycle of rights to broadcast La Liga is designed for three seasons: from 2015 to 2018. Most of the television companies that bought the rights a year ago have signed agreements for all three seasons. However, the subholding, either due to the budget not being formed at that time, or due to ordinary haste, as it turned out, bought the rights for one year. At least this is the semi-official version voiced by Konstantin Genich.

There is also an alternative assumption: they say that the contract was signed for all three years, but Match incurred a debt for broadcasting the last season, and supposedly the broadcasts will not begin until it is repaid. I’ll leave this as a conspiracy theory, but there is a possibility of such a scenario.

What now?

As you can see, there are no broadcasts of the Spanish championship on “Match”. Official explanations, as always in such cases, boil down to the terse “negotiations are underway.” What the main difficulty of these negotiations is, of course, will not be announced publicly, but the question, of course, comes down to money. Match, at the beginning of its work, and even more so now, does not have a huge budget for purchasing content, and management is looking for any opportunity to save money. The contract with the nuclear submarine, for example, was reduced in price by more than half.

La Liga is shown by the Ukrainian “Footballs” and the Russian-language “Setanta Sport Eurasia”, which operates in many CIS countries. Illegal broadcasts are quite easy to find online; there is no legal broadcaster in Russia yet. The laola1.tv service broadcasts the Spanish championship in the same place as Setanta, but Russia and Ukraine do not fall into its coverage area.

Why doesn't Eurosport pick up the rights?

After the Discovery channels, working in conjunction with NMG in Russia, signed the Championship, Cup English League and the Italian Cup, the audience, of course, is waiting for the continuation. However, Eurosport, with all its wide financial capabilities, is aimed at making a profit: the pan-European holding cannot afford to subsidize the purchase of rights from the budget of the parent company, as Gazprom-Media did for many years.

The theoretical purchase of the rights to Primera requires a complete restructuring of the operating model of Eurosport channels in Russia. Such acquisitions are not made on the spur of the moment; they must be prepared several months in advance. The management of the Russian division of Discovery has repeatedly emphasized that it does not intend to enter into confrontation with Match, and La Liga is clearly within the zone of interests of the subholding, especially with the allegedly existing three-year contract.

If you are expecting top football at Eurosports, then you need to pay attention to the Bundesliga, for which Match’s contract ends this season. Perhaps in a year Eurosport 2 in Russia will resume broadcasts. So far, the contract for the new cycle has not been signed in any of the countries in the North-East region. When will broadcasts on Matches begin?

The obvious answer: when the negotiations end. Genich hopes that this will happen by the third round, after a break for national team matches. I can assume that they will hold out until the end of September, but the experience of the Bundesliga shows that they can hold out even longer.
